I read this book in the early 2000s. I’m pretty sure it was based off the Cinderella story line. Girls father dies and she is left with her cruel step mother and step sisters. She’s quiet and shy and eventually she disappears inside the walls of the house. She lives there for years observing everyone. The step mother plans a costume party and she dresses up like a beautiful moth, not a butterfly. At the party she meets a boy and I think she ends up befriending one of the step sisters.
