SOLVED. Juvenile or YA. Read 2011ish. Mother of young protagonist is rescued from some kind of sci fi institution. A sciency gun device was used on back of her neck, leaving a large mole there, maybe as a tracker or ID as part of experiment/program.

Juvenile or YA SciFi. Read around 2011. Really all I remember is the presence of a big mole on the back of a mom's neck, that was created when she was shot there by a sciency gun device as part of an experiment/program. I remember a scene describing her lifting up her hair in the back to reveal it. Also, the mole may eventually shrivel up and partially fall off after some time.
