Berit | 641 comments Well I'm impressed! I really don't even switch around my television programs either., It's probably just a preference thing.

message 202: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Casceil - I work the same way! I think reading or listening to multiple books is an acquired thing too. I didn't used to do it. It probably started when I could switch from print to digital books and then added audio to the mix. I gave up TV too. I used to channel surf between two and three TV shows if they were on at the same time. I just got tired of all the commercials. At the end I was only watching Public Television but the pledge drives drove me crazy. I supported them, but they were relentless if I did not renew.

I may have several books going, but I agree, one usually becomes more engrossing until it is finished and then I go back to the others and finish them. I seem to do it in batches. And, I usually only have one audio book going at a time.

I have upto 5-7 books going on at any moment. It helps me save time as I keep flitting from one book to another until at least one of them gains my interest to finish it off. And then I keep adding more to the pile as and when I feel like reading something fresh.

message 204: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments I have one real book and two audiobooks going at once. One is mine, and one I'm listening to with Lexx. Audiobooks are a new thing for me and I tend to listen to things I can put on and off with no issues.

I can't read more than one book at once. If I change books for Topplers or such, I put down the current one. All or nothing.

message 205: by Tasha (last edited Mar 14, 2015 04:21AM) (new)

Tasha I usually have 1-2 real/kindle books and an audio going. The audio one sometimes ends up having a real/kindle one attached to it as well as I like to really see where I am while listening. I also don't always finish my audios before they are due so the backup insures that I will get to finish the book. I only started doing this after a couple of years on goodreads. ;)

message 206: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I am able to read more than one book at the same time(generally no more than 3), but I really like read one at a time best. It's just a matter of preferences in my case.

message 207: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I usually read one at a time, unless I can't get interested in one. Then, I'll read something else for awhile, and go back to the other one later.

message 208: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I guess it is just a matter of preference, so obviously I prefer reading one book at a time. That would make sense, because I only like watching one television show at a time, I will even sit through the commercials.:-)

message 209: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I don't switch instantly from one book to another. There are several hours between my audiobook and print book doing other things, so it's easy to switch the focus from one book to the next.

What I was saying about tv, is that I watch an hour's program. Then, when the next program comes on, I switch focus to the next program without any problem. I don't switch to another channel during commercial breaks, either. My ex used to do that and it would tick me off.

I've been watching Empire - a one hour series that plays once a week. Watch for an hour, and then wait a week to pick up and continue on with the story. In between, I watch other tv shows. It's no different with a book. I read for a couple of chapters and put it away to pick it up the next day and continue. In between, I read a few chapters of another book.

message 210: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I think we should all be grateful there aren't commercials and books :-) ;-)!

LOL! Shh, Berit. Don't give them any ideas!

message 212: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That what I do when reading more than one book at a time, Janice. I like to focus in one book at at time, tough. Anyway, most of the time I'm reading more than one, since they get overlapped for some reason or another.

message 213: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Toppler books, I only read one at a time.

message 214: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments So the fact that I like to read 3 books at the same time in 1 chapter increments is not how everyone else reads?? :)

I've had up to a dozen books on the go at the same time when I can't settle down to any one type/genre.
About the only thing I try to do is have different subjects, it can be confusing to read two books about the same moment in history or set in the same city.

I'm quite a lot like you, Dawn. I always have something between two and six paper books ongoing, plus one audiobook for the commute. I also tend to choose books from different genres so as not to get mixed up. I often read a couple of chapters from one book, then immediately pick up the next one etc. I've found out that that way I'm able to read for a longer period of time, since when I get bored with one book I can just switch to another.

message 217: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I usually read just one, only two if I have to. If I have two books going at the same time, I switch between them with hours in between the two. One on the train to work, the other on the train back home. I still get mixed up about small things though, often not very relevant for the story, like was it in this or that book that X happened?

message 218: by Kerri (new)

Kerri I can only read one fiction book at a time, but I sometimes have a non-fiction on the go at the same time. I tend to struggle to stay focused with non-fiction and like to break it up a bit by reading a novel when I need a break from it. I usually get caught up in the fiction books so it takes me forever to finish the non-fiction.

message 219: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I only ever read just one at a time but now I tend to have 3 on the go - one audio for commute and chores, one kindle for out and about, and one paperback to read at home to cover all bases. I don't have a problem switching.

message 220: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I usually only have one book on the go at one time, although I do occasionally have 2. I find I get royally confused if I have too many on the go all at once.

message 221: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I normally read one at a time but if I'm not liking the book then I will have two going at the same time :) if I forget what was going on in the first book I don't end up caring to much since I wasn't liking it anyways ;)

message 223: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4019 comments I thought some of you in the colder parts of the world might appreciate this quote I found in a book I was reading for a different challenge: "Snow doesn't seem to be made for cities...Here in town there is neither a place for it nor does it do an atom of good to anybody..." Carl and the Cotton Gin by Sara Ware Bassett.

message 224: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I vary and sometimes focus my energy/time on one book. Other times I have 3 or 4 books going at same time. I do like to have different genres/subjects going so I can keep stories straight.

Above holds true for topplers as well. I tend to keep a lot of library books out as I like to be able to read somewhat by whimsy of mood and the vagaries of life :)

message 225: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments I'm reading Land Below the Wind and really enjoying it. It was published in 1939 and is an account by Agnes Newton Keith of the time she spent living on the island of Borneo when her husband was stationed there.

Mariab | 3059 comments Berit wrote: "I think we should all be grateful there aren't commercials and books :-) ;-)!"

Kindle has a sort of. Not IN the book, but in the reader. You can pay less for a reader if you agree to receive publicity periodically

Mariab | 3059 comments I read Lightning for this challenge
The book was promising, and in the beginning I liked it, but then it fell bottomless and it was just ok (with bonus).
I hate it when author writes a book thinking only in the (possible) future movie, and each scene is a movie-cliché

Glad you enjoyed TJ - isn't it amazing how writing endures through the ages and is still so relatable and relevant. Half way through and hoping I feel the same way at the end of the book. Did you know there are two other books in the series? They are - Three Came Home and White Man Returns.

message 231: by KimeyDiann (last edited Mar 17, 2015 08:40AM) (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I had decided I was going to participate in this challenge and listen to Winter's Tale... Then I realized it is a 27+ hour audiobook and I'm not sure I can finish it before the end of the month.... then I read back over the rules and it says seasons are not acceptable (even though I could argue this for winter... winter weather advisory, winter storm warning, etc.)
So I guess I will sit this one out after all. And I'm going to start on Winter's Tale today anyway. :)

message 232: by Sarah (new)

It's getting down to the wire for me too. I've still got to finish the ebook I'm reading before I can start my chosen book for the challenge. Too bad I can't count the one I reading - there's rain on the train window.

City of Women by David R. Gillham

LOL, I knew it wouldn't :)
But, you have to admit, no other season is used in weather descriptions. I've never heard the local meteorologist talk about a spring weather advisory or fall storm warning or summery precipitation. Just winter.

BTW, I'm not trying to convince you to change your mind, I'll never finish this book on time as it is... I'm just being playfully argumentative. XD

Oh, right, I'd forgotten that, Lilisa. Maybe I should finish them off this year, but there's such an abundance to chose from! Let me know if/when you go forward with this series.

Sarah | 18550 comments OK I lied. I got hold of an audio copy of Snow Crash (I also have it on Kindle) as I haven't got one on the go at the moment. Problem solved. I'm about 10% in and I have no idea what is going on. But I like the author's style of writing and it has a good narrator.

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes I started a book but at the moment I'm not sure whether I'll be finishing it or not. I think I'd have been better reading the print version rather than audio. Started well. See why I recommended it be read as a buddy read. It is a tricky bugger. But generally speaking at some point you will always be confused in a Neal Stephenson book. Hr writes that way

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I started Solar Storms for this challenge, but not sure I want to commit to finishing it by month's end. The writing is very good, but the story is richly layered and i'm finding it a bit confusing. Will proceed as time and interest allows.

Meanwhile, I've begun with Drinking the Rain: A Memoir, and expect this is the book i'll complete for this challenge.
