Thank you, Beth!

Here are the five for this month. I tried to do a variety for you. The nonfiction one is a little lengthy.
Beth my picks for you:
and
I have both of these on my TBR and they can count for the color challenge too.
Jennifer wrote: "Denise, I'm picking

Thank you Denise. Looking forward to both. I put off Smoke & Bone for ages but recently picked up her Strange the Dreamer series and really enjoyed it.
Lance, I am selecting for you:
Own the Arena: Match Points for Winning, From the Blacktop to the Boardroom (I am not 100% sure but I think I have met the author during my consulting days - I don't know her personally, though)
Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend (love Red Barber's broadcasting! still listen to him on old games)
Path Lit by Lightning: The Life of Jim Thorpe (what a fabulous athlete!)
Victory on Two Fronts: The Cleveland Indians and Baseball through the World War II Era (I am a big reader of WWII history so this just sounded interesting to me)
Lance wrote: "Thanks, Joy. For some reason, I figured you would pick at least a couple baseball books! :)"Couldn't resist :-)

Well, the Tricia O'malley is a short so it'll balance the NF out. Great picks! Thank you.

Sorry for the delay Joy, I only know 2 authors, so I'll go with those and one that fits the colour challenge The Flight from the Enchanter
The Simulacra
Requiem for a Dream

Happy to choose for you!
Finished my first one yesterday, a 5* read, I'd already picked up the second book when it was on offer, but half way through I decided that I needed to buy the third one to see how the tale was going to end - the other two won't be quite as good for me, the first is set on the island my brother lives, so I've been like a dozen times and it was interesting to see that some things haven't changed since the book was set in 1885!
I love it when books are set places I've been. I've only read a couple that are set where I live, and both were nonfiction, and one concerned incidents I'd never even heard of (and I've lived here most of the last 40 years). Eye-opening! I'm glad you enjoyed your pick enough to finish the series!
Finished #1 of 4 -
. Was better than I expected as most books that take lessons learned from sports and applied elsewhere disappoint me as they are very cliche-ish. Not this one - reads very well.
Jennifer wrote: "I love it when books are set places I've been. I've only read a couple that are set where I live, and both were nonfiction, and one concerned incidents I'd never even heard of (and I've lived here ..."Me too, you can visualise it so much more.
Finished
. I enjoyed it but not as much as
. I will continue the series because it does have goos world building and room for more character development.
Second book read, I've just changed my mind on the rating and only gave it 2*, it was a hard slog, it is written in native dialect, which kept taking me out to work out what they were saying, then one character I can only assume had a lisp, with saying things like 'Not a tholitary one', and maybe a German with things like this 'Vell, my vife tellth me'.
Finished my second pick
giving three stars. It just did not hold my interest. Picked it up off and on for over a week but I could not stay invested. I was actually happy to reach the end. Not bad writing just me maybe?

I have not read this book, but know it’s always hard to get through a book you can’t really get into. Hope you next read is much better.
Finished the second one yesterday, Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend
. Great biography of the legendary baseball broadcaster. Thanks for picking this one, JoyD. Now working on the Jim Thorpe book, but it’s looooong…may not finish until September! Here’s my review: http://sportsbookguy.blogspot.com/202...
Finished book 1 of 3 for August - too depressing for me.Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr. - 2* - My Review
3rd book was a 4 star read, this is another author I've met, but darker than the others of hers I've read, but enjoyable The VillagersMy 4th unfortunately was a DNF, it nearly got thrown in the bin as the first chapter was about animals being caught in traps, I tried perservering, but there was more talk of animals being trapped about page 55, so I gave up, I considered throwing it in the bin, but a friend convinced me to just write a warning in it and put it on the charity pile Fox Evil
I finished
& enjoyed it very much. One of the best cozies I've read. So funny & well-done. Some reviewers hated it, but I found it delightfully zany. Thanks, Lance! It was just what I needed.
Finished #3 of 4 Victory on Two Fronts: The Cleveland Indians and Baseball through the World War II Era. Disappointed in it on two fronts. One, I’ve read others by this author before (on the same team) and like them - not as much this time. Two, this had less team history and business and felt more like a straight play-by-play and off season transaction listing. Usually I like books like this but not this time - felt too dry. Still okay, but I just expected more. 2 1/2 stars, rounded to three for this site.
Finished book 2 of 3 for August:Flight From The Enchanter by Iris Murdoch - 3* - My Review
I liked it but not as much as some of her other books (The Sea, The Sea and The Black Prince). I am slowly making my way through her catalogue.
Finished # 3 of 3 for August:The Simulacra by Philip K. Dick - 4* - My Review
Another great month - thanks, Desley!
I finished
, gave it 3 stars. The book was enjoyable and cute. I liked the characters. The story was slow at times but I liked the ending.
Figured this one was going to take me awhile, but I didn't think THIS long -
. It was very good and I enjoyed reading it, but I think the general messages could have been expressed in about 200-300 fewer pages

For anyone unfamiliar, this is a monthly challenge where you post a link to a shelf you created. It can be named "PIFM" or "Pick It For Me" etc, if you want one dedicated only to this challenge, or you can use an existing shelf you already have, as long as it has 100 or fewer books on it. The link must be to the specific shelf, or you will not be partnered.. Indicate how many books you would like to have picked for you from that shelf for the month in question. There is no lower limit as to how many books you can have on your shelf, but, of course, they should be books you are interested in reading during the next month and have ready access to.
On or about the 25th of each month, I will post who picks for whom. In order to accommodate an uneven number of participants, pairs will not be reciprocal -- in other words, it won't be Joanne picking for Jennifer and Jennifer picking for Joanne. It may be Joanne picks for Jennifer, Jennifer picks for Herman, and Herman picks for Suzanne, and someone else entirely picks for Joanne.
IF anyone has not been "picked for" by the 30th, I will pick for them if the designated picker can't be contacted by PM.
When you are assigned someone to pick for, note the number of books in parentheses after that person's name in the pick list, go to the link for their shelf, and pick that number of books for them. Post the books in a new message here. That person has the entire following month to read his/her picks. Someone will be picking for you the same way. We all like to see what people think about their picks, so we hope you will keep us posted in this thread!
Example: "In for five, please!
PIFM"
The HTML template for linking your shelf can be found here and if you have trouble, PM me and I will help you.
Your designated shelf must be set so that others can see it. To set up a PIFM shelf for those who would like to, go to the "MY BOOKS" link in the GOODREADS toolbar, scroll down below your shelves on the left until you see the "add shelf" button, and click that. Name it PIFM or Pick It For Me. Add books to it, and post the link to it in this challenge as described above. Again, if you need help, please don't hesitate to PM me!
If you are in for August, post your shelf and the number of picks you'd like to have below. See you on picking day!
August pairs:
Jennifer picks 2 for Denise
Martha picks 4 for Desley
Denise picks 2 for Beth
Desley picks 3 for Joy D.
Beth picks 1 for Jackie
Joy D. picks 4 for Lance
Jackie picks 5 for Jennifer
Lance picks 1 for Martha
