Fantasy- young valkyrie banished for not choosing a king to die in battle, and is saved by a lone hunter who helps her to save the king

I read this book around 2000- 2004, but it was published before then I believe. A young Valkyrie in training meets a king and is told that he is meant to die in battle, but she doesn't choose for him to die so she is banished. A loan hunter finds her in the woods and saves her.
