What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - Henry Farrell

Could this be phrased "a book you had to wait for"? just to make it shorter when voting.

There are tons of options for this but a couple of examples:
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Get a Life, Chloe Brown
The Two Lives of Lydia Bird
Eva Luna
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

Not to be pedantic, but wouldn't it be "A book by a Nobel prize winner" since Nobel prizes are usually given out for a body of work, and rarely for a specific book.
I do love the prompt, though. And since it doesn't say Nobel Prize in literature, you could read a book by a Peace prize winner or one of the science disciplines.

Oh good RachelG! I was happy to find listopias that covered this idea that included mysteries and romances as specific genres. I wouldn't have thought of those as being books that would include careers or hobbies (except of course for law enforcement/PI type careers in mysteries).

I assume this is British format and is 500,000 to us Americans....
Just realized this thread should be titled Poll 3 Suggestions, rather than Round 3 Suggestions, so I just changed it. It is the same thread in case you have clicked out and come back.

I think both terms work. It's not unusual to say something like "I'm reading Shakespeare" or "I'm reading Kafka." And of course you mean you're reading a book by that author.

And it could be a book that author wrote much earlier or later in their career than when they won the prize.
Hilde, if you are still on here, are you ok with changing the wording?

Clearly that was delaying the nominating (sarcasm)..... we all knew what you meant!

A book involving power or politics:
Fiction or non-fiction about government politics, organization politics, politicians, political issues, leadership, or stories involving the use (or abuse) of power.
The book might involve a political issue, such a gun control, criminal justice, wealth-gap, abortion, black lives matter, feminism, the environment, immigration, mass shootings, or the Jan 6 attack on the US capital. The book could be set in a fantasy world, outer-space, a religious organization, corporation, school, royal court, or any government. Stories about how power is gained or wielded to control people, events or to get ahead (Machiavellianism, influence tactics, coalitions, types of power, use of force, scandals.)

I went ahead and put it as A book by a Nobel Prize winner, I hope that is ok, I think that will be clearer for voting. For some other prizes like Pulitzer, it is for a specific book, but not for Nobel.

I wish someone would second the delay one! I'm a library reader and the whims of the Hold Shelf govern my reading!

I see what you mean, I'd like to hear from Hilde about her intent. I don't think it would be a big problem if someone read a book by a Peace Prize winner.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy would definitely work for that.

Great, I will adjust it.
Great, I will adjust it.
Could we possibly reword the adventuring prompt to make it more concise?
A book with a female or nonbinary protagonist who is an explorer/traveller
(I feel like explorer, traveller, adventurer are all kind of the same, but I appreciate that explorer and traveller are different enough to include both, while adventurer is not much different from either of those other two. If that makes sense.)
I would be willing to second the rewording, but not the original.

Are you and Miles ok with the change Emily suggested? I'll put it for now as the original wording.

Just a reminder that you can find a full list of prompts already on the 2023 list in the third post on a href=https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... this thread.
A little reminder of how things are done around here:
How it works:
- The topics for the 2023 reading challenge list will be determined by a series of mini-polls, the number of which depends on the number of prompts winning in each mini-polls
- Suggestions for each poll will be opened until 15 suggestions are received and “seconded”.
- The voting thread will open the day after suggestions go live. You can find the schedule here.
- The poll will be posted after the voting thread is opened for 24 hours, and will remain open for three full days.
- Each user has 8 votes to spread between their favorite (top) and least favorite (bottom) prompts
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list (between 2 and 5 depending on how the votes are spread)
Rules:
- Each member can only suggest OR second one prompt
- Suggestions close after 15 total seconded prompts
When suggesting and seconding, feel free to provide examples and descriptions that may help other members understand the prompt better. These descriptions and examples will be copied over to the voting thread for further discussion.
As always, please express any and all feedback (respectfully, of course), either here or in The Wild Discussion.
