Michelle (michellereading) | 102 comments Ugh - I want to add a suggestion from the Wild Discussion thread, but it wasn’t my idea, I just liked it, so not sure I feel comfortable doing it. I keep hoping it just shows up when I refresh. 😂

It's fine to submit someone else's suggestion if you liked it.

message 53: by Rae (new)

Rae | 76 comments I'd like to nominate

a book with a child protagonist.

This could be a kids or YA book or it could be book for adults written from a child's perspective like To Kill a Mockingbird

Michelle, which one was it?

message 59: by Kahlia (new)

Kahlia | 103 comments I liked the 'retelling' idea from the wild discussion, so I'll nominate "a book that is inspired by or pays homage to another story"

message 60: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Chiasson | 74 comments "Jette wrote: "A book to which you did not have instant access due to waiting on a release date, wanting to read it on vacation, a library hold, etc."

I would second this one if it could be reworded to what Robin P wrote

A book you had to wait for

I'll take that one, since it's the same wording as the original. Meghan, you can suggest or second something else.

Miles Row | 27 comments Robin P wrote: "Cassidy wrote: "I'll second "A book with an explorer or adventurer or traveller who is female or non binary as a main character""

I'm OK with "A book with a female or nonbinary main character who is an explorer/traveller"

As there is a lot of discretion with how people take part it makes sense to shorten the list to explorer/traveller but I chose main character as it might be more understood that there are multiple main characters but possibly not as clear that there can be multiple protagonists.

Steve | 615 comments A book related to a common phrase, saying, or idiom.

message 69: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellereading) | 102 comments The one I liked was a book with a disabled character - looking at disability as physical or neurodivergent. I think in the Wild Discussion there was some conversation about the best way to word it. I kind of like even just a book with a character who is neurodivergent, as that seems a little different.

I know there was some discussion about the most respectful wording but if you'd like to propose it in some form, go ahead. I think "character with a disability" is more favored than "disabled character" - seems minor but gives the person more agency. If any of the original folks who discussed this want to chime in, please do.

In the UK disabled character is better as it is seen as people are disabled by barriers. An example is a wheelchair user is disabled by access only by stairs not by being a wheelchair user. Social model of disability as opposed to medical model.

message 75: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3956 comments Mod
Ok, common phrase was seconded first so it is the last one. Please continue to workshop the disability one in the Wild Discussion, and maybe find several people who would like to propose it for the next poll. Poll 4 will be the multi-week poll, so Poll 5 will be the next time to submit it. There is definitely interest.

Good to know, we definitely should have this one at the next opportunity.

message 78: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellereading) | 102 comments Yes, originally we were taught person first language as special education- person with a disability- but that is beginning to change as more disabled people start to prefer normalizing the word disabled. But, it is debatable depending on who you ask. Maybe it can be worked on for the next poll - I think there may be info on the We Need More Diverse Books website.

Thanks Michelle! That was my idea. I didn't suggest it this week because I had another suggestion that I had been working on earlier. Very happy that you were interested enough in the idea to bring it up yourself.

I thought we had worked out the wording, but I see that what we thought was acceptable wording is not the same around the world. I hope we can come up with wording that will be appropriate no matter where you are.

I liked the idea but not book #23 in my TBR, it's a bit long... maybe with 23 in it so I can read 123 or 230? (ooo, I just added 230 to my library list)

We had a prompt like this a while back, like maybe 20th on your TBR/shelf and I just kept counting my books in different ways (alphabetically, by date, left to right, etc.) till I came up with one I wanted. I have MANY books in my house but some of our members get all theirs from the library and book #23 may not be available when they want it. We also might have some amazingly disciplined members who don't keep more than 10 or 20 books on their Want to Read. (I have hundreds myself.) Still, I do like the idea of tying in the number 23 somehow.

message 93: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Brown | 260 comments Also if you have a series in your list a specific number may be a book you aren’t at yet

message 94: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
I think the prompt was just "The 20th book" and you could interpret that however you'd like. I listed all the books I owned in alphabetical order and went with the 20th there, since I don't use my To Read list on Goodreads very efficiently lol

message 95: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1060 comments We had "The 16th book on your TBR" in 2016. It was my first year, so it didn't occur to me to manipulate my TBR to get a different book, I might not be so well behaved now :)

message 96: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I have about 623 versions of a TBR List so it's very difficult for me to accurately do a prompt like "the 23rd book on your TBR List" so it's just a freebie.

Same here!!! I have many lists that I created for different monthly tags, topics, and for different challenges, and I reorder them in different ways. It's not even that it's a freebie for me, I don't want to feel like I'm cheating. My goodreads To-read folder has thousands of books, so it's not really a TBR. The 23rd book in that folder (if ordered by the date it was added), would be from the first year I joined goodreads, and my tastes have changed a lot since then. (I also enter a lot of giveaways, and those books get automatically.)

message 98: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments I enter a log of giveaways, too, NancyJ! I have a bookshelf for all the giveaways I've entered. Once a month I go through the giveaways that have closed where I didn't win and check whether my library has ordered the book. If they have, I move it to my public library list. If they haven't I decide whether to delete the book from my bookshelves or keep it on the list to buy later.

Me too! I can see it would be helpful for challenges if I put my TBR into categories that might match various challenges, like genre, setting, theme, etc. But I can't see taking all that time when I could be reading a book. I already spend way too much time on all my GR groups and challenges!
