Joe | 3 comments Not Johnny Tremaine. Coming of age historical fiction where a boy has to take his blind father/grandfather's homemade shingles/tiles/some kind of handmade wooden items to sell in a big city far away. Hijinks ensure on the trip with hundreds of these items by himself. He arrives in the big town (Boston/Jamestown/etc) only to find out the handmade items are no longer of value. Read it in middle school. Main character has an odd name. Cutting?

Rainbowheart | 28699 comments Is the boy a teenager or a younger child?

What year did you read it, approximately?

message 3: by Joe (new)

Joe | 3 comments Probably young teenager.. whatever would have been appropriate for the time to travel solo. Mid 90's, probably 95 or 96.

Annie Suminski | 2 comments I am looking for this too! It was shingles and he had a pair of oxen that he had trained that were pulling the load. I think that the title had something about a road through snowy woods in it? I read it in the late 90s or early 2000s. It was not a very long book and obviously not widely read.

Joe | 3 comments That's it! Almost a year later and it's solved. My wife (a librarian) solved it with the Google search boy +shingles +snowy road. I tried every possible combination but it was the snowy road that was the key. I was SO CLOSE! Thank you everyone!
