Fiction: Follows a girl whose home was lost either in the war in Afghanistan or Iraq and is trying to make it to a refugee camp

I read this book probably around 2007 so I am not sure if it was about an Afghani or Iraqi girl. There was an animated picture of a middle Eastern girl on the cover and it was probably around 200 pages

Plot points I remember:
- MCs home was destroyed in bombing attacks on her city
- she and her dad were split up from her mom and brother and set to meet at a refugee camp
- dad was some kind of priest or rebel sympathizer and was executed. He gave his daughter some books to take with her
- girl meets up with a boy and a younger girl to go to the camp, scrounging for food and shelter along the way
- little girl offered them shelter with her dying mom and she was safe because she lived off of a mine field
- little girl believed she was safe because she fed the mine field so it would not hurt her. Other children followed suit
- they made it to the refugee camp but the little girl died in a mine field because she did not feed that one

Honestly the attacking forces may have been the Taliban so probably Afghanistan

I lost my copy of the book and can't find the title for the life of me! I appreciate any help tracking it down
