The Wizard and The Dragon is available in Kindle Unlimited, which I have, so I took a look.The beginning is nothing as described by OP, despite the apparent coincidence. Seems an interesting book, though.

It begins with a young boy, no older than Ten, who returns from a forest outing to his mountain vale village only to find it is afire, and being attacked by an enormous dragon. The dragon has collapsed the gates into the village, leaving the only means of ingress/egress being an attempt to climb the walls, whereupon the dragon of course easily plucks them off.
He successfully climbs the wall the wall anyway, and desperately assays to find his parents. Meanwhile the dragon is busy going from building to building ferreting out any humans it can find while collapsing the buildings in the process.
The boy screams upon finding his parents dead in the ruins of his home, yet not yet discovered by the dragon and consumed.
The dragon notices the boy now, and immediately goes in pursuit of him. Dodging in & out of the ruined village buildings the boy discovers a few villagers huddled in fear and hiding in hopes of the dragon's departure. One aged figure warns the boy that now that the dragon has seen him, and has his scent, he will relentlessly pursue him until one of them dies.
The boy manages to escape by means of a magic that he himself does not realize he is exercising, much less owns, and the rest of the story is about his flight from the accursed dragon; his discovery of magic through a hedge mage he encounters; his enlistment of other refugees to form a guerrilla army to eventually confront and destroy the beast.
Lots of detail regarding a love interest; learning swordsmanship from various fighting men he encounters; growth in his magic abilities; etc.
Any help?
