Characters in book Michaela, boy with dyslexia and a pet pit bull. One character has lesbian parents. The kids are sent to camps when sick. A group of friends run when they find out one is sick. It's a series and I believe it was written by a woman author

I believe it was pre 2016 but not sure exactly when? I think my daughter was still in high school because I shared the series with her.

Unfortunately it's not either of those. The infected weren't undead. The virus also progressed over some time not instantly or from a bite. It also slowly took away their intelligence and then violent when the disease progressed to the end stages. Only teens or possibly all children could catch it? The kids were sent and left to die in quarantine camps. Newly infected without symptoms were thrown in with mindless and violent ones and every stage of illness in between. I believe Michaela sacrifices herself in some way to save her friends at the end? In my opinion the story felt like an allegory of AIDS?

So just to clarify, there are no actual undead zombies, but the virus makes kids and teens mindless and violent? Do you remember if they bite people like zombies would, or try to hurt/kill them in other ways?

Monument 14 has teenagers that ended up holding up in a Target or some megastore after a plant went down and chemicals affect you based on your blood type. this affected more than just teenagers though

Quarantine affected teenagers. If an adult got near them they would die. they were locked in their school. it didn't actually turn anyone violent however as anything goes with the breakdown of society and its rules violence ensues

No undead and yes mindless and violent. I don't believe that they bit people. I also think what I remembered as Michaela was actually Micah? And she was the character with the 2 lesbian Moms.
