I cannot remember much of this book because it has been some years since I read it, but here is what I remember.
This young girl doesn't want this "coming of age" ceremony she is set for and she accidentally breaks a sacred bone during the private ceremony with her mother. She is cast into an alternate (or split) world where her mother helps heal the bone. She finds out that once the bone is healed there is a chance that this alternate life she is living will disappear and she will be thrown back into the day she broke the ritual bone. (This does end up happening at the end of the book.)
One keynote I have is that in this magical village, people get little dark-shaped tattoos when they experience something tragic in their life. There is this lonely young boy who is covered in them from head to toe.. everyone avoids him because he is cold and puts everyone on edge. The main character and the boy are sent on a mission (to a school, I believe? and the girl reluctant) where they eventually grow closer to one another and develop a love relationship. The city they went to was very big, nothing like the main character had ever seen before.
Those are the main points I can remember but the finer details I cannot.. I also believe that the girl's mother dies at the end of the book- but I am not 100% on this fact. The bone does heal though, and she loses everything she had gained over time while the bone was healing.. the boy doesn't remember her or anything they had.
If it helps... the way the first book ended, it sounded like it was a cliffhanger so there is a chance by now that there is a second book. I read this book maybe 3 years ago. It was a book written in medieval times maybe? I'm not sure but there were villages (like where the main character was from). Book was published in ENGLISH.
