Pandora is quite accepting of Gabriel having a mistress, more upset that she is a married woman. When she and her friends talked about the possibility of him having contracted a “pox,” did you know what were they talking about (even though they didn’t)?

I knew what they were talking about although the term "pox" confused me a little. I was wondering why they would use smallpox to refer to venereal diseases.

[Anita]

I understood what they were talking about. Gabriel was considered a rake like his father and the concern was valid because they really didn't know him.

I think they picked up the term pox because the girls gossiping in their group didn’t know a thing about venereal diseases! Pox was the worst disease they could think of, which is why they ended up with so many “variations.”

I knew what they were talking about. I thought Pandora's discussion with Gabriel about "the pox" was hilarious.
