"I’d go to… to a mall or a Walmart or something. Surely unholy abominations wouldn’t follow me to Walmart."

“I’m Captain Panash Othaar, and my pronoun is he,” the skeleton says to me.Charlie Jane Anders. Victories Greater than Death (Kindle Locations 600-601). Kindle Edition.
and every single time someone on the alien spaceship introduces them selves they also state their pronoun. And I do mean every single time. This gets old rather quickly. If it was one of the races on the spaceship it might make sense as a cultural thing, but all the races do this except one who doesn't have a pronoun.
and as this was marketed as being YA, all the action focuses on the human YA characters
This is from a favorite poem and not SFF, but I can't resist:"A cat-minority of one
is all that can be counted on
to tell the truth; . . ."
Anyone recognize it?

It comes from Curiosity by Alastair Reid. Terrific poem.
"Theo has no hugs to give, not that anyone would want a hug from this horrible thing anyway."- Theo Tan and the Fox Spirit
“…it was like being rocked to sleep in a hammock made of cats, under another pile of cats.”Saint Death's Daughter by CSE Cooney

They must be in Heaven, then?
Next door's cat is asleep on our bed while our cat has been relegated to the laundry basket. That's not a quote, but maybe it should be...

It was such a delightful image, I had to copy into the notes app on my phone immediately (I am reading Saint Death's Daughter as an ebook). For a book that is mostly not delightful, there is some beautiful imagery here and there. (Don't get me wrong - I am really enjoying the story, but it is about a necromancer, and many of the things being described are less appealing than being rocked to sleep under a pile of cats.)
Maybe it's because I had to trim the claws of a friends cat today (and the cat hates me) but being under a pile of cats rn makes me think stabby stabby
"human creativity in the arts, and human innovation in technology—are intimately related. Every advancement in technology, including military technology, remains, foremost, a feat of imagination. This is where humans excel." The Peacemaker's Code by Deepak Malhotra
Brett wrote: ""Odd that if he ever got another promotion, he would actually have to lose elevation.""Sounds like a space opera officer, moving from space to ground side after being promoted.
"When we were eight, Dad cut me open from throat to stomach."I used this a long time ago in a thread on opening lines (and Anna guessed it!), but I thought it would go quite well here. It's from Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy
“When you do mouth to mouth, do you blow air or suck?”~my daughter
okay, now from a SciFi book:
“The best part of having bad news was being able to tell as many people as possible.”
― Grant Naylor, Better than Life

I love your daughter's :)
Brett wrote: "@Dj, he was the commander of a dirigible."At least it is consistent in use than. If unexpected in the source.
Brett wrote: ""Since when is an *oink* a lie?!""I am pretty sure that has been true since the creation of the Horse clans series. In those book people with telepathy can talk to animals mentally. Mostly Horses, and plains cats. Another species that has telepathy is Pigs. They of course do not talk to humans due to the fact that people love bacon.
Since it is never mentioned in any of those books I am going to guess Animal Farm
Brett wrote: ""Subject gave the following statement: Holy shit there's a nasty thing hanging up in the woods.""Surely that's the unabridged version of Lord of the Flies.
@Adrian Deans - The Twisted Ones. There were a bunch to choose from. Shame the book itself wasn't very good.
"The rock building was rock-colored like it should have been, but the fire truck wasn't red anymore."
I presume that is supposed to be humour and is consistent with the general tone of the book. If not that would absolutely wrench me out of the story flow.
Kaladin wrote: "“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”"That’s a good one.
Vogon constructer ships from the inimitable Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Another in the same vein is :'It has been said that Vogons are not above a little bribery and corruption in the same way that the sea is not above the clouds,'
"I think you're underestimating how charming an orc can be when they're not pissed off."From Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
Good quotes from both of you. 👍I recently came across this one: "Ghent loomed on the horizon like a hangover." from Doctor Who: City of Death
Tempted to describe cities I don't particularly care for like this from now on. :D
