Brett wrote: ""Incidentally, there's a psycho in the shed.""Well I am sure that would kill almost any conversation. I think that is going to be something by Stephen King.
Michelle wrote: ""Matthew, in contrast, realized he was as dangerous-looking as a sugar cookie...""Well that is an embarrassing self realization.
Sarah wrote: ""I am dumb enough to walk around without a blade of any sort and also,” he said with a hint of ponderous regret, “I am entirely fictional.""Wow, that is some kind of comment to hear from anyone.
Brett wrote: ""Franz removed his cap and showed Hohagen the dent in his forehead.""Well since I was so far off on the last one, I am going to say. Screaming Eagles.
Bnz wrote: "Umm, interesting... Especially "plotless". OK, Use of Weapons is even more plotfull...If anything, some plot elements might be seen as a bit superfluous.
As for "pointless", how about an outlook on the Culture from the opposite side, both by the main adversaries and by, for the lack of a better word, "third party"? And a way to learn more about Idirans, the only civilization the Culture engages in an all-out war against?
Then again, Banks loved to show how his utopia is ambiguous (to borrow from Le Guin)...
Do you like any of his works"
Sorry, missed this and just rediscovered it. I love many of his non-sci-fi works, especially Complicity and Espedair Street. I've read them all, in fact, but only read two of his sci-fis - Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games. The latter had some interesting world building but was weak (in my view) from a story telling perspective - which is always the biggest thing for me. Stories lacking a strong plotline lose my interest, no matter how good the world building and ambience.
😂@Michelle - a transport plane full of German officer' wives (badly disguised as nurses) crash landed near the author's unit - whereupon they emerged in the aforementioned odd mixture. He determined what they were based on their general attitude of, "This kind of thing happens to peasants, this doesn't happen to *us*!"

Now it all makes much more sense!
Brett wrote: ""It was the oddest damn mixture of anger, terror, and just pure bitchiness!""An updated version of the Odyssey talking about Scylla or was it Charybdis? I know one of them would fit the description, well maybe both of them.

LOL. Ah yes attitude reveals a lot about upbringing
He didn't hold officers' wives in high esteem. Officers themselves were only a step above. I had a plethora of quotes, that one just grabbed me early.
Brett wrote: ""Other, more routine attacks - the gastric kind - occurred on a daily basis.""Sounds like a lovely slice of life story ;)
@Alexandra - It's from Mustang Ace. He was stationed at a primitive fighter base in San Severo, Italy, during WW2.

"She proclaimed more than once that 'I am more byoothiful than Hedy Lamarr, only my theeth are too far apart.'"
Brett wrote: ""She proclaimed more than once that 'I am more byoothiful than Hedy Lamarr, only my theeth are too far apart.'""lol
"if you have to resort to shooting, you have done something wrong. Most combat results from a lack of immagination"
"I picked up a loaded revolver from my writing table. 'Oh, not quite alone,' I answered with a laugh."
“OK, so, um, where was I?” “You called us numbskulls,” I prompted him. “Technically, I called YOU a numbskull. The others were, um, collateral damage, I guess, heh heh,”
"Lutz's joy was premature: 'To make matters worse, my penis, which I considered quite normal in length, had shrunk to miniature dimensions.'"
Favorite quote, and probably not obscure enough for this crew. "Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself."
I have always liked this quote. “English is the result of Norman men-at-arms attempting to pick up Saxon barmaids and is no more legitimate than any of the other results.” - H. Beam Piper
We also have a thread for Quotes to live by, for those who are looking to share meaningful quotes, not just goof around :)
Thank you very much. Brand new here and don't know all the threads. Now I have to decide if any of my quotes are important. I ran a series of presentations before I retired trying to give work-life lessons to the staff. One a month for a year. Larded them with quotes. Maybe I will put some of those in Quotes To Live By.
Please do! I also wanted to link it here, because it can be hard to find, since searching the group discussions for threads with "quote" in the title also returns anything with quotation marks, and that includes our four monthly book discussions in addition to many others, so a lot of results to comb through!
Kaladin wrote: ""Legal defense or not, every living generation wants her recycled.”"That one sounds like my kind of book!
