SOLVED. YA novel where boy convinces father to send him back to medieval times and he gets trapped there. [s]

Looking for an old novel I read as a kid about a boy whose father creates a time machine that can send you back in time, but to get back to the present you have to stand where they sent you at the right time and have them bring you back from the present. The boy convinces his father to send him back to I think medieval Italy to watch a jousting tournament, but he gets stuck in the past when he goes back to the designated spot too late. I think he speaks Italian and some Latin so he's able to get by and eventually runs into a band of traveling orphan children who he takes on to help reach their destination. I specifically remember one of the main orphans was a young girl named Maria. I think there's a man he meets who helps him too in the journey too. Not sure if this is enough to go on, but I really want to find out what this dang book was that I read all those years ago.

I'm pretty sure it's Kruistocht in spijkerbroek. I've never read it myself, but it's a well-known Dutch YA/children's book so I've heard quite a bit about it since I live in the Netherlands :). In English I think it's called Crusade in Jeans.
