Book was originally written in the 1930s I believe, although the copy I tossed was probably released in the 1980s or early-mid 1990s (no not the original edition). Copy was soft cover, with a blonde girl with braided pigtails down the sides of her face/shoulders on the cover, facing the camera. Showed her head, shoulders, and top half of her chest.
The back of the book said it was based on a true story of a white settler girl who was kidnapped by Indigenous peoples during the colonization of the US, and once she was freed by the white people eventually, she chose to stay with her captors.
At the time I was debating tossing it, I remember reading online that it was a very problematic book for Indigenous stereotypes and the "poor little innocent white girl" narrative, and that the girl it's based off of wasn't even blonde like the title depicts her, so that coupled with the fact that it hadn't been borrowed in 10 years made me toss it.
Author was a woman as well.
Any ideas?
