Buddy Read for The Expanse Series-Leviathan Wakes-Nov 2022
I'll probably join this one y'all. I've been wanting to read this series but was kind of intimidated. Starting with friends will make me feel better!

Terry! I was in an awesome store this weekend and thought of you, they had a big sword hanging on the wall! I knew you'd love it, hope you're doing well!

Haha, yes, I'm still needing to get that sword!! Thanks, Sally, hope things are good for you too.

I’ve wanted to read this forever and loved the SyFy series that eventually went to Prime.
My husband and I binged the hell out of this series and he’s not even really into sci-if. It was just awesome and I can’t wait to finally read the books!
Yay! Glad you're all joining! I'm also excited to say I found a copy of this at Ollie's for 2.99! I couldn't believe it!

Thanks Sally! I'm getting more excited about this and great score.
I've wanted to read this series for years but would always think, "Do I want to start another series?!"
I guess I needed the nudge on this and glad N&D is doing this group read.

Me too Kristen and glad you are joining this one too!

Not a bad idea! I'm about to finish up a couple so might be the right time to get started on this!

First, the character development is next level. Second, this book has everything which can sometimes make books confusing. I’m listening to the political intrigue, the scientific inquiry, the different factions and some of the downright horror (I think this group will like that the most) and I wasn’t confused at all. There were several times where I stopped and just wondered to myself at how I am understanding everything happening. That’s good writing. Third, the character development, bros!
Wow Felina! You got the book zoomies! I'm so glad you liked it! Strong characters are the most important thing for me when I read so I'm really looking forward to this now.
So happy you're joining us Choko!

I am listening to the Audible version of this now, and I recommend it. Jefferson Mays is the narrator and I have zero complaints.

Nice! Thanks! :)

Fantastic! Sold!! LOL Thanks. :)

I'm also considering watching the series, but I don't want to spoil anything for myself inadvertently.

The ["racism" (?) - I don't think that word is adequate in this case] and classism is apparent within a few pages.
As for the physical descriptions, they won't stick with me. I'd have to see it.
I'm in chapter 3 - They've just (view spoiler) . I am not feeling good about this whole scenario. I want to tell Holden and the crew to RUN!

I know his face, but scrolling through his IMDB page, I don't know why.
I'm more TV than movies, and I haven't watched any of his shows.

And your instincts about chapter 3 are correct!

He was Punisher for one movie but I’m most familiar with him in an HBO show where he kinda fell into being a male prostitute. Anyway, I find him handsome in a rugged way so I’ve followed his career a little bit.

The bottomline is that the three main groups are competing interests, and simply don't like each other. They all have pejoratives for each other (inners, dusters, earthers, belters, skinnies, etc), but the primary axis of conflict is economic - who owns the resources, and who gets first access to 'new technology...' as technology is always an economic resource.
You'll hear laments from belters about literally having to 'buy air,' and what happens when you can't. I think someone has said somewhere that three way conflicts are inherently unstable, and economic needs are a daily pressure for anyone living on the edge as pretty much everyone (except the elites) does.
So, economic pressure, an unstable situation - all that's required is a spark...

Humanity has colonized the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond—but the stars are still out of our reach.
Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for—and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.
Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.
Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations—and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.
