There will be a Buddy Read for the Expanse Series by James S.A. Corey, starting with Leviathan Wakes in November 2022.

Humanity has colonized the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond—but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for—and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations—and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

I'll probably join this one y'all. I've been wanting to read this series but was kind of intimidated. Starting with friends will make me feel better!

Kevin | 217 comments Count me in if that's ok.

Choko (chokog) | 106 comments Spot:)

Graeme Rodaughan | 1259 comments I'm about half way through the series and I'd do a restart/re-read.

Awesome everybody! This one is going to be great!

Felina | 648 comments I’ve heard so many great things but the books are fatty and it’s a long series. So intimidating! I also thought it would be better with friends and I also thought if I went public with reading it, it would make me actually so it.

So glad you suggested it Felina, we can do it!

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments I don't plan to re-read with you all, but you're in for a treat! I'll probably lurk & chime in here though.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 314 comments I literally had this in my hand earlier in the week as I convinced myself not to buy it. I'm in for November!

Haha, yes, I'm still needing to get that sword!! Thanks, Sally, hope things are good for you too.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 314 comments I got this book for my bday back in June so I'm hanging for this BR lol

Ginger | 586 comments Shoot, you all and Terry talked me into this BR! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂
I’ve wanted to read this forever and loved the SyFy series that eventually went to Prime.
My husband and I binged the hell out of this series and he’s not even really into sci-if. It was just awesome and I can’t wait to finally read the books!

Terry | 451 comments Awesome, Ginger!

Thanks Sally! I'm getting more excited about this and great score.

I've wanted to read this series for years but would always think, "Do I want to start another series?!"
I guess I needed the nudge on this and glad N&D is doing this group read.

Haha, yes!

Felina | 648 comments I think I’m going to start this a bit early. I’m listening to a library pick and it’s just not grabbing me and none of my other holds are ready yet. Might as well get started!

Terry | 451 comments Sounds good, Felina. I can’t believe how quickly November is getting here!

Not a bad idea! I'm about to finish up a couple so might be the right time to get started on this!

Felina | 648 comments I just finished this and Wow! I can’t wait to see what you all think.

First, the character development is next level. Second, this book has everything which can sometimes make books confusing. I’m listening to the political intrigue, the scientific inquiry, the different factions and some of the downright horror (I think this group will like that the most) and I wasn’t confused at all. There were several times where I stopped and just wondered to myself at how I am understanding everything happening. That’s good writing. Third, the character development, bros!

Choko (chokog) | 106 comments I will be here tomorrow;) Felina, you are fast:)))

Wow Felina! You got the book zoomies! I'm so glad you liked it! Strong characters are the most important thing for me when I read so I'm really looking forward to this now.

So happy you're joining us Choko!

Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) (denis_lamontagne) | 195 comments I started this yesterday and really looking forward to reading the series. I absolutely loved the TV series so I can't wait to dive deeper into this. :)

Nyssa | 262 comments I have the ebook, but I'm considering adding the audio narration. Does anyone have any feedback on that option, please?

I am listening to the Audible version of this now, and I recommend it. Jefferson Mays is the narrator and I have zero complaints.

Nice! Thanks! :)

Felina | 648 comments I second the audible narration. It’s excellent. Jefferson is very good at accents which is good cause there are tons of them in this book.

Fantastic! Sold!! LOL Thanks. :)

Nyssa | 262 comments If home worlds are essential to this series, I will need a list of characters with their planet of origin!

I'm also considering watching the series, but I don't want to spoil anything for myself inadvertently.

Felina | 648 comments Hmm I don’t think that’s an issue in this book. There are three places to be ‘from’. Earth, Mars and the belt. And the story kind of lays that out clearly as where you are from does have baring on your physiology and attitude about certain political situations. But I feel like it’s contained within the narration of the story so there isn’t a situation where they reference something and now you’re confused because you forgot that person was from the belt and not earth. It’s not Anna Karinina where multiple characters straight up have the same name.

Felina | 648 comments I’m so excited to watch the show now. My husband read this book a few years back (and failed to properly recommend it) and he watched the show and I saw bits of it. I never got into it cause I’m not a big tv person but now that I know the story I want to see how they do it. Plus, Thomas Jane…🤤

Nyssa | 262 comments Cool. Thanks!

The ["racism" (?) - I don't think that word is adequate in this case] and classism is apparent within a few pages.
As for the physical descriptions, they won't stick with me. I'd have to see it.

I'm in chapter 3 - They've just (view spoiler). I am not feeling good about this whole scenario. I want to tell Holden and the crew to RUN!

I know his face, but scrolling through his IMDB page, I don't know why.

I'm more TV than movies, and I haven't watched any of his shows.

Felina | 648 comments Yeah, physical descriptions of characters never stick with me. I imagine then how I want to anyway. That’s why I had a crush on Raistlin from the DL books all through highschool even though he is described as sickly with golden skin and white hair and hourglass pupils. Don’t care, in my mind he’s a fox.

And your instincts about chapter 3 are correct!

He was Punisher for one movie but I’m most familiar with him in an HBO show where he kinda fell into being a male prostitute. Anyway, I find him handsome in a rugged way so I’ve followed his career a little bit.

Felina | 648 comments I just finished The Butcher of Anderson Station which is 1.5 in this series. It provides a background for Fred. The audio was an hour long. I recommend the tiny read.

The bottomline is that the three main groups are competing interests, and simply don't like each other. They all have pejoratives for each other (inners, dusters, earthers, belters, skinnies, etc), but the primary axis of conflict is economic - who owns the resources, and who gets first access to 'new technology...' as technology is always an economic resource.

You'll hear laments from belters about literally having to 'buy air,' and what happens when you can't. I think someone has said somewhere that three way conflicts are inherently unstable, and economic needs are a daily pressure for anyone living on the edge as pretty much everyone (except the elites) does.

So, economic pressure, an unstable situation - all that's required is a spark...
