The June 2022 Reader Pick is Shockwave by Lindsay Buroker. Please use this thread to post questions, comments, and reviews, at any time.

Official description:
What if being a hero was encoded in your genes?

And nobody told you?

Casmir Dabrowski would laugh if someone asked him that. After all, he had to build a robot to protect himself from bullies when he was in school.

Fortunately, life is a little better these days. He's an accomplished robotics engineer, a respected professor, and he almost never gets picked on in the lunchroom. But he's positive heroics are for other people.

Until robot assassins stride onto campus and try to kill him.

Forced to flee the work he loves and the only home he's ever known, Casmir catches the first ship into space, where he hopes to buy time to figure out who wants him dead and why. If he can't, he'll never be able to return home.

But he soon finds himself entangled with bounty hunters, mercenaries, and pirates, including the most feared criminal in the Star Kingdom: Captain Tenebris Rache.

Rache could snap his spine with one cybernetically enhanced finger, but he may be the only person with the answer Casmir desperately needs:

What in his genes is worth killing for?

Audrey | 515 comments I'm starting this book now. Chapter 1...

Audrey | 515 comments One of our characters really loves her freshly ground and brewed coffee. Here is her comment on being told she would be using a not-so-fresh version for a bit, "There are twenty-seven ingredients in the coffee-and-cream bulb. The shelf-life is fifty years. I don’t think radiation is the reason why people get cancer out here.”

Audrey | 515 comments Finished! The book is high speed from the first pages to the end. Geeky but smart guy, highly intelligent and competent women, mysterious bad guy, and indestructible robots. The end of the book has some wrap up, but is a lead into the next book, rather than a true ending.

Leticia (leticiatoraci) This seems interesting and I read other space opera by this author and liked it, so I'll pick it up.

Richard | 60 comments I thought I posted here already but not - I really enjoyed this. Not normally my type of space opera but I resonated with all the characters (I thought Kim’s often dry or sarcastic remarks were hilarious) and I was in the mood for a straightforward plot line that nevertheless held my interest and kept me going. Normally I want books that have a more definitive conclusion, but at $.99 for this and $4.99 for the next installment, I’ll happily keep going. Thanks for this nomination/selection!

Lizzie | 303 comments I read the series and thought it was great. Interesting characters. Not your typical heroes. A character who appears to be on the spectrum. Good bad guys; bad good guys. Humor. A good story in each book and good story for the overall arch of the series.

I have read her other sci fi and liked the writing style so much I even broke down and read some of her fantasy series - not my usual reading genre, but very enjoyable.
