SOLVED. YA Fantasy series. From before 2010, set years after nuclear war. [s]

Hi! I read this series in 2010 from the library. I believe its a fantasy young adult series. The time is said to be genrations AFTER a nuclear war destroyed everything on earth so its in the future but almost medieval at the same time.

I cant remember much of the plot except that theres a temple/orphanage that the main character, a girl, is sent to. Things happen, Theres a black horse who she ends up helping and then being able to understand. She leaves, and gains healing abilities later on in the series. And she also gets a tattoo (of a rainbow crane i think) that ends up representing she was chosen by something. And she ends up helping a giant white bird.
The horse is also a jerk at the beginging, a super vain stallion.

Its been driving me crazy for years trying to remember it and i hope someone might be able to recognize it.

It's not the Obernewtyn Chronicles? That definitely has the nuclear war, an orphanage-like children's home, a horse that helps the main character, and paranormal abilities...
