Michael | 5 comments Hi, back in the '90s or perhaps early 2000s in the library, I read a rather mediocre fantasy novel that claimed to be 2 books in one. If I remember correctly (I can totally be wrong), it has a red cover where what looks like a tiny samurai is confronted by a big western dragon and the title may have been something involving Stone and Spring (or something involving the seasons). The main character is an exiled tribal warrior who seems rather Celtic, and he's been sheltered by a wizard who was a diplomat along with his tragically slain son (who was cut down while helping someone). The wizard takes to the young warrior and gives him some sword training, a new katana-like sword plus armor and even teaches him some mystical skills so that the young guy can go adventuring (and one of the first things he does is rescue a blonde young woman a few years older than him that he falls in love with, but she has a fiance). Can't remember what the second story within that book was about.

Now there was a follow up book that also had the same 2 stories in one novel schtick. Some time has passed and the hero has encountered his love interest who had left her fiance. Other things that happen, well despite the warrior's great swordsmanship - he's captured by his archenemy and then is held down and raped by the guy while in front of his love interest. The hero's adopted father turns out to not just be a wizard but also an alien from another planet, so wizard dad picks up his ray gun and casts a teleportation for the rescue. Meanwhile the hero learns his enemy soul has been trapped by a demon or something and being the noble guy he is he does some mystical mental journey to free the villain's soul and totally forgives him for raping him!!

So when wizard papa arrives and is about to vaporize the villain with his ray gun, the hero convinces the wizard to leave him alive. The wizard who has fixed up his UFO then teleports his adopted son and the son's love interest so that they can leave that primitive planet.

Other thing of note, the planet is mostly at standard medieval fantasy tech but at rare moments the tech is a bit better, such as having battleships that use gear-punk automatic catapults.

Does anyone know these books?
