The girl looks through a telescope and is transported to another world.
The first person/alien/creature she meets has a green furry coat with lots of pockets. I think he always has something useful in one of his pockets. He might suffer from depression too. When they first meet, she is cold so he takes off his coat and has another on underneath.
I'm sure she makes more friends but can't remember anything about them.
She saves the world and her new friends find a way to get her home.

SLIGHT SPOILER
The ending is a little corny, they send her home "she opens her eyes, looks around and smiles" The end :)

Excellent details, Paul! Is this a picture book, then? Do you know roughly when you read it (year range)?

Thanks. I think I’ll have read this late 80s, maybe early 90s. Think I was older than the target age but I used to read all kinds.

It wasn’t a picture book but a short story. I guess aimed at 8-10 year olds ish. Maybe a bit younger.

Haha! This is it! Didn’t think even the title would ring any bells but as soon as I saw it I knew.

I’ve had a look and I’d forgotten about his feet 😂🤣. Annoyingly the book doesn’t seem to be available as e-book anywhere, only an audiobook. And at first glance even a physical copy seems to be expensive. I’ll keep looking
