It's Groosham grange LMAO Thank youuuu!!!! I was somehow stuck in the lists that tended to miss that one! Lifesaver Becca.
It was about a boy who is NOT looked upon fondly by the people who are taking care of him (I feel like it might be his aunt and uncle, with their son who bully our main character) because he's not very useful and he is another mouth for them to feed. However, one day a pamphlet arrives for the main character, advertising a "boarding school like institution" for talented children which is fully funded. He can only visit outside the school once a year (or some other absurdly small amount of time). Obviously his 'caretakers' decide to send him away to the school, and he has to take a variety of methods to reach the school, one of which is a boat which floats him across a giant lake to the school on a gloomy island. Once at the school I forget what the curriculum is, but the kids he meets there are all very eclectic and you can't quite tell what they might have in common. Although, eventually our main character realizes that once the kids turn (I think 16???) they come back to school the next day with a ring and an entirely different personality, one very serious and impersonal.
At some point he makes friends with a guy and a girl, but the guy ends up being turned and our main character and the girl try to escape (on her birthday) but to no avail, and she gets turned the next day. At the end of the book he gets captured on his birthday but it turns out that it's just a ritual where they gain their powers because the common denominator among all the kids there is that they are the seventh child of a seventh child, which is why they have powers that mature when they turn a certain age.
I literally have no idea what the book is called, I've spent over a week looking and I am officially calling in for help T_T
