Turns out Helen already knew Edmund wasn’t her father as he informed her so on his deathbed with Quincy present. Lady Berwick also knew as Albion is her husband’s nephew. Both advised her to keep silent and not tell Rhys, believing he would end their engagement and knowing she’d been “compromised.” Were they truly looking out for her?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments I do think they were looking out for her. But Helen couldn't live with such a big lie between her and Rhys.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments Edmund didn't care about Helen's feelings. He told her to hurt her, in my opinion. He wanted to strike out at his wife one last time before he died.

Lady Berwick is a puzzle. I don't believe she had Helen's best interests in mind as much as her own. I'm still thinking about who Lady Berwick is.

This is the life they know. For them, it’s better for a young woman to be properly married and keep the secret because the alternative life is difficult. I do believe they were giving her the only advice they thought appropriate.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments Quincy and Lady Berwick were trying to help. Most men who were looking to marry up in society would not have accepted Helen after learning about her background. Lucky for her, Rhys is not most men.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I think they were trying to help her. I agree that most men wouldn't have accepted her if she told the truth.
