Helen finds an old unfinished letter written by her mother to some named Albion where she acknowledges he’s Helen’s father. Did you have any suspicions that she might not be Edmund Ravenel’s daughter or did this come as a complete surprise? Were there earlier clues?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments I had just an inkling that she might not be Ravenel's daughter. She was a very different temperament than the other Ravenel's and she didn't share many physical characteristics with them.

Phrynne | 14 comments Same Anita! Helen always seemed to be the odd one out.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I didn't think she was Edmund Ravenel's by birth. There was something different and secretive about Helen that started in the first book. I did believe that she was a distant relative on her mother's side, and Edmund didn't want her in the house.

There was just a whiff, maybe because she was so different from her sisters and seemed to have been treated differently. But it wasn’t something that I thought about much at all until it was revealed. I was surprised but not shocked.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments It did not occur to me that she wasn't a Ravenel by birth. I was surprised when she read the letter and read that she wasn't Edmund's daughter.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I don't know why but I did think that she was Edmund's child through an affair making her still a Ravenel. It never occurred to me that she was not his child as I didn't think Edmund would keep a child that wasn't his.

I think fear of the scandal would be worse than kicking his wife and child out.
