This is one book in a series of fictional books about the same man. Each book revolves around a real historical event and in the author's notes at the end of the book, the author separates historical facts from the parts he fictionalized. I read this book around 2016-2018. It's set in modern times. I'd guess it was published after 2000. I think the plot revolved around a lost manuscript that described the death of Christ. At one point, another character explains to the lead character how the Gospels were written decades apart (from 50AD to 100AD) and how each Gospel was written more sensational than the previous one. I.e. Tomb found empty by women. Next, tomb found empty and women meet stranger on the road who they later believe was Jesus. Next, tomb found empty and an angel appears. Next, Jesus appears to disciples. This character explains how the Gospels can be dated by historical references to events or leaders at the time.
