There was a sci-fi novel about a guy learning how to time travel to avoid getting caught after killing his wife and eventually giving up on killing her at all because each time he thought he got everything perfectly fine he'd get caught anyway
Two guys in prison. One looks for a way to escape while the other says the best way to escape is never be caught.
The reason he was caught was a chair being thrown to lie over a bloody spot, proving the 'fight' took place after the murder, not before it .
The second time he got caught because the chair was actually very fragile and still didn't break down after being 'thrown' without covering any bloodstains, proving it wasn't a 'fight' but a setup.

Fiction, short novel. No idea about the names 😅 it was more than 20 years ago!
I think it was something like twenty pages really...
