My most recent foray into horror (as a reader) is Ray Bradbury's short story, "The October Game," which is downright gruesome ... or just a big psychological trick. I've read Bradbury's novels but not his short stories, and this one made quite an impression. I also read Lord Dunsany's "Two Bottles of Relish" after hearing it described as a classic. It, too, is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach.

The October Game is one of my favorite stories of all time!
Edited to add: Now I'm not sure...I thought that one was in The October Country, but I don't see it in the table of contents. I must be confusing that one with something else. Now I'm going to have to track it down.

“The October Game” is in Long After Midnight, among other Bradbury collections.

I read "The October Game" in an anthology titled 13 Ways to Dispose of a Body (ed. Basil Davenport, Dodd, Mead, 1966). It's a rather grisly collection of stories about the creative ways in which killers "get rid of" the person they murdered. While a lot of the contributors are probably best known as writers of mysteries, this collection definitely feels like horror to me. The contributors are: Arthur Williams, Stanley Ellin, Melville Davisson Post, John Collier, Robert Graves, Edith Wharton, G. K. Chesterton, Dorothy L. Sayers, Cornell Woolrich (a fave!), Ray Bradbury, Robert Twohy, Lord Dunsany, and Philip MacDonald.
