I read this in the 2000-2010 decade. I believe it was fairly new at the time. It was a hardback book I borrowed from the local library, written in American English. I now know it was not "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich as I was remembering it.
What I remember was the author working as a temporary farm laborer in California and living in a shared trailer with other workers to learn how they could survive on the pay. I believe the author was a woman. Other workers did nice things for her and helped her in small ways that meant a lot. I think she worked the job for a month and moved on to another similar job.
