Survival series, set in post-apocalyptic world, desert atmosphere. Following either one or two young children only

Plot:

Series follows a young child as s/he tries to survive in a desolate, desert world, foraging etc. Very little water around to drink from. Very few if any other humans.

We find out in one of the later books that it's set in a post-apocalyptic world, based on clues only - it's not directly mentioned.

Time Period:

I read a part of the series/book at least 20 years ago. Unsure if the series was complete or still in progress at that time. Think I got it from our public libraries, but I don't think we keep records of checkout history.

Target Audience:
Possibly a YA/Children's book. Don't rule out that it's targeted for adults.

Have searched through the list of post-apocalyptic books on this page: http://eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com... and it's not there. Tried a few searches on various engines, but no luck. It's possible that it's not listed in the post-apocalyptic section, because this is somewhat of a spoiler?
