Anyone who did not volunteer to read for round 1 and would like to volunteer for round 2, head here to claim a slot.

Saar The Book owl | 728 comments Deanna wrote: "@Saar, could you please add Calico Confusion to your tower shelf? Thanks."

I thought this one can't be used here or for the mini as it is used as banked for Battleship?

Or can you use a book for the team as well for Battleship, but not for the mini?

message 607: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 728 comments I've put my pick for round 2 for the Battleship and will put a book here also that I've finished.

The books we read for battleships also count for our general team points. We just can’t use the same book for the battleship and the monsters mini.

I've added it. You can ignore my previous message about it. Karolyn helped me out.

Deanna | 3529 comments Kraken is finished. It's another hydra.

Lernaean Hydra

Lernaean Hydra has entered your lands and destroying villages as it looks for a new home. If you manage to defeat this monster be prepared to answer "how are you still alive" every time you tell the story. The monster is interested in shiny things and is unconcerned about losing their head(s). Best be quick.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Read a book with MPG Adventure.
3.) Read a book with gold text on the cover.
4.) Read a book where the MC has a sister.
5.) Read a book that is #9 or higher in a series.

message 612: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Another 800 pager. Ugh.

message 613: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Do y'all think that The Panathenaic Games would count for "Read a book that mentions some type of championship games (World Cup, Olympics, World Series, etc)."

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 816 comments Karolyn wrote: "Do y'all think that The Panathenaic Games would count for "Read a book that mentions some type of championship games (World Cup, Olympics, World Series, etc).""

Yes.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments This book I finished a few days ago would fit Lern Hydra 5. It is no 16 in a series. Six Graves (DI Kim Stone, #16) by Angela Marsons T205

message 616: by Elisabeth (last edited Jul 09, 2022 03:17PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 816 comments Finished Just One Look by Harlan Coben

I can do the new 800 pager Never by Ken Follett
I should be able to push through it in the remaining time. Happy to be overtaken though.

Thanks! I want to start another long one… but am facilitating a 3 day workshop this week for work and doubt I can finish something that long by Friday.

message 619: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Look who’s back…

Lamia

The Lamia has been spotted on your lands and the disappearances of children are on the rise. Requires some planning and moderate effort to defeat, look to the stars for the answers and to the shadows for the monster.
To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 200 and 299 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with the night sky on the cover.
3.) Read a book where someone is kidnapped.
4.) Read a book that features a prophecy.
5.) Read a book where a child (under age 18) is an important part of the plot.

message 620: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Does anyone have a banked book with a kidnapping?

message 621: by Karolyn (new)

The Bowl Is Already Broken (2005) by Mary Kay Zuravleff
Pagecount: 422
Letters: B, K, M, Z
Main character is pregnant and works in a museum

message 626: by Sixty (new)

Sixty (sixtyone) | 311 comments Finished King of Flames for a kidnapping one.

message 627: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Sirens

The Sirens have been spotted on your shores endangering ships heading for the harbor. Easy enough to defeat if you know how, don't recommend calling them one hit wonders though.
To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 100 and 125 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that takes place on a boat or ship.
3.) Read a book with a character who is deaf (any degree acceptable)
4.) Read a book with a rope on the cover.
5.) Read a book with "Mermaid" in the text.

message 628: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments I’ll be back in a few hours and will try to do some more work on the spreadsheet. If anyone has a 100-125 pager that has a rope on the cover, is set on a boat, and has a deaf character… we could sure use that right now 😄

message 629: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Argus

Argus has been seen on your lands with a case of the dry-eyes. Very hard to kill but can be distracted with white cows. He is vigilant and a great bodyguard as he doesn't need to sleep by only resting a few eyes at a time. Enjoys a good olive, may look for him taking a respite in an olive tree grove.
To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 500 and 650 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with at least 2 pairs of eyes visible on cover.
3.) Read a book with a rock on the cover.
4.) Read a book with character works in protective profession (e.g., police, security guard, bodyguard).
5.) Read a book with "olive" found in text.

message 630: by Sixty (new)

Sixty (sixtyone) | 311 comments I can read If I Can't Have You: Susan Powell, Her Mysterious Disappearance, and the Murder of Her Children which covers two pairs of eyes on the cover and olive in the text.

message 633: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 134 comments I'm hoping to finish one of my big 800+ monsters tomorrow, and start another one. We'll see if I can make it through the Stephen King monster before this mini is over.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 816 comments My Ken Follett 800 pager is turning out to be a faster read than expected. Nearly halfway in 2 days.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Elisabeth wrote: "My Ken Follett 800 pager is turning out to be a faster read than expected. Nearly halfway in 2 days."

He does weave a page turning tale at times.

message 636: by Silje (last edited Jul 11, 2022 02:48AM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments I just finished my 800 pages book yesterday. I did the audio, but the paperback has a map in it.

message 637: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments Ok captains, my latest audiobook, "Taken in Death", has the audio version as its main page. It has 14 editions, but only three with page numbers and they are all different: 79, 127, and 160. The audio is 3 hours and 17 minutes, so per the rules, it is most likely more than 100 pages, but which do you want to use?

message 638: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Silje wrote: "I just finished my 800 pages book yesterday. I did the audio, but the paperback has a map in it."

Yay! I’ll log it and get a new monster as soon as I get to work. And will take a look Taken in Death to try to figure out a page count.

Keep up the great work everyone!!!

message 639: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Caucasian Eagle

The Caucasian Eagle has taken to the skies over your lands in the search of do-gooders who don't think the rules apply to them. Not so hard to defeat with a little effort and maybe setting some traps with organ meat.
To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 200 and 299 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in Russia.
3.) Read a book with a bird on the cover.
4.) Read a book with the letters LIVER in title (any order)
5.) Read a book where a character goes to prison/jail (or is already there).

message 640: by Karolyn (last edited Jul 11, 2022 07:09AM) (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Alright team - I did some updating on the spreadsheet. There are 5 tasks we don't have books for right now. If you have a banked book or book that you are reading that works for one of these... can you please drop a note here or in the spreadsheet? Y'all are the BEST TEAM EVER!

T221 Between 100-125 pages (may be able to use Silje's book - working on page count question)
T222 A book that features twins
T225 book that mentions some type of championship games (World Cup, Olympics, World Series, etc).
T227 Book set in Russia
T230 character goes to prison/jail (or is already there)

message 641: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 728 comments My book Lara kat op avontuur by Dion Leonard , allready in the sheet, but it mentioned ultramarathons. Does that count too? If so, you can use it for T225.

message 642: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments I've got T222 with New York to Dallas, and I shifted books so that task T230 is covered as well.

I asked the Mods and they were in agreement that given the large difference in page numbers that we follow the "audiobook without page numbers" rule and call it 100 pages. :)

message 644: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments By the way, the two kids kidnapped in Taken by Death are twins, it that helps on the monster tasks.

Ohhh... that does help. Will let us save another book for later :)

message 646: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments There are a few new monsters this week… and we got one. Can’t make this up.

Cookie Monster

The Cookie Monster has been seen eating your city's winter food stores. May be best to pacify with plenty of cookies and used to entertain and care for children. Hard to kill because he's so endearing.
To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in a city.
3.) Read a book where the MC bakes (professionally or for personal use).
4.) Read a book with the letters SID in title.
5.) Read a book with a blue cover.

message 647: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments This one might go fast! We just need a character who bakes (personally or professionally). So let us know if one of your banked or current books fits that task.

message 648: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments Here's another new one.

Penanggalan

The Penanggalan has been hunting on your city streets. They may not be well known in this part of the world, but that doesn't make them less deadly. Learn what you can about them before planning your attack, it may be what saves your life.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Read a book set in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timore-Leste, Vietnam).
3.) Read a book where author identifies as female.
4.) Read a book with MPG Paranormal.
5.) Read a book with the word "vinegar" in text.

message 649: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Cretan Bull

The Cretan Bull has been spotted running amok across your lands destroying defensive walls and crops alike. He is hard to defeat and really should of been sacrificed as the gods intended. Also, not opposed to participating in some marriage infidelity. So there may be some surprises popping out 9 months from now.
To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 350 and 450 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book with a white cover.
3.) Read a book where something physical is destroyed (e.g., building burning down and not a relationship being ruined).
4.) Read a book where the MC ignores important advice.
5.) Read a book with a 7 in the page count.

message 650: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments There is an issue with the formulas on our new monster. I can’t look at it till tomorrow (Deanna might beat me to it). But feel free to claim any of the tasks for the Cretan Bull.
