I thought about this but I don't know - it shows on TinEye as orange and things that are actually gold usually show as a brown.

Yeah, I never liked TinEye. That's one bizarre and sometimes flawed site lol! But the difference between yellow and "gold" with text is definitely iffy. Well, technically gold is a type of yellow usually, yellow-orangey, which to me the text is but there are also then different shades of Gold. Fun :)

Looking at this palette of gold and there is brown in some gold shades, so maybe that's what Tineye picks up on since brown is a more common color? The top gold shade here has a lot of brown mixed in

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Weekend is ALMOST here for me. I have to get through one more day and 7 hours of work.

Been a BUSY week but at least it's gone quickly

My goals to work on next (and currently) and finish some by weekend in time for new challenge:

The Fifth Witness (Mickey Haller, #4; Harry Bosch Universe, #22) by Michael Connelly Anatomy of a Murder by Robert Traver Last Act by Christopher Pike Wolf's Bane (Wolves Next Door, #1) by Auryn Hadley Deceptions (Cainsville, #3) by Kelley Armstrong Dead Men's Boots (Felix Castor, #3) by Mike Carey

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I just finished Zeus and killed Typhon.
The Captain's group agreed that My So Called Bollywood Life was gold, so we killed the Lernean Hydra.
AND I shifted Robin's Lonesome Dove read into that 800+ task for Penanggalan so we could cycle that one too.

Waiting for some new monsters now. :)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Okay so we got TERRIBLY unlucky in our wheel spins tonight and are ending with alllll the 800+ page monsters. UGH.

As of this post we have just over 19 hours until the end of the Monster Mini, we might be able to squeeze out another kill or two and we might not. We do, however, still get points for each book used - so I've input as much as I could into the official spreadsheet. Here's what's open:

Drop Bear
1. 500-650 Pages // The Dragon Reborn, Vicky (~4 hours of listening time)
2. Set in Australia //

Stymphalian Birds
2. #6 in a Series //

Penanggalan
2. Set in South East Asia // Last Tang Standing, Vicky (~4 hours listening time)

Kraken #1
1. 800+ Pages //
2. Ship on the Cover //
5. 8 in the Series Number //

Kraken #2
1. 800+ Pages //
2. Ship on the Cover //
5. 8 in the Series Number //

I'm going to finish Last Tang Standing first tomorrow - probably around 10 AM EST, so we can maybe try to get one more spin in and hope for some luck in the bank. Then I'll finish The Dragon Reborn! Should be able to fit both into my work day. :)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments That's a wrap on the Monster Mini!

If either Stacey (The Measure) or Jen S (The Maid) can add to our last Caucasian Eagle the justification for a character who goes to prison, we can squeeze 5 more points out of the bank.

We defeated a total of 54 monsters and only left 4 unslain (which is apparently not an actual word!) - although they're all more than half dead so I think we did a pretty solid job.

We ended with 2200 points total!

The Inspired By Muses Mini Starts Now

Well... 50 minutes ago by the time I post this. Books for this have to be finished after the challenge turn over (9PM London, 4PM EST) today.

I pulled the tab from the official sheet over to our planning sheet so we can start filling in some options - let's try to keep it to 6 claims per team member until everyone has had a chance to check in this week. :)

I'll have some more info over the weekend (and I have to get together the list of books *I* want to tackle) but at least wanted to get us started!

Did they change this somewhere?? I was going off the rules already posted by the mods for this challenge in announcements.

"Books used may be started at any point during TT but cannot be finished before the start of the mini challenge. Books used for this must be completed by the end of the mini challenge timeframe. "

It just says they can't be finished before the start of the mini but can be started before the mini begins.

Edited to add - I know the exception is Calliope, that those must be read before the mini start.

Edited to add again- saw in three other team threads they are using books started before the mini but not finished until after mini starts, so it's probably just awkwardness of wording above. I was going to freak for a minute thinking something changed.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments The monsters were fun but I'm glad to wave bye to the beasts.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Ugh, Malibu Rising is on hold at my local library now. Hopefully it comes in soon.

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I have a question about the series chain. Do the books need to be finished in sequential order, as well? Like, if I were reading the second book in a series, would I have to wait to finish until whoever is reading a first book in a series is done? I'm thinking the answer is no, but I wanted to make sure.

message 1233: by Robin (Saturndoo) (new)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments I was looking through the SS and I know that I have 2 books that I can't get a verified word count for : ( Sorry. How do you get verified word counts besides ARBF. It's a good source for verifying children's,YA and juvenile fiction but not for any other genres.
What I'm getting ready to say, please don't take offense. I'm not trying to be mean or rude but I was just curious about this and how it is justified.

Per the rules books have to be 100 pages long. IF they have these MPGs Childrens / Kids / Poetry / Play / Graphic Novel / Illustrated / Photography / Art (or which have "Illustrated" in the title or an "Illustrator" contributor in the metadata) must have at least 30,000 words. A good rule of thumb is that if the audio is over 3 hours, the book will be long enough.

OK--if I read A Heart's Disguise which has a page count of 100 and the audio is 1:50:11 it is acceptable because it isn't in the genres listed above. Well, at that length, it probably isn't 30,000 words. So how is it justified to make those specified genres unacceptable without a 30,000 word count/or audio over 3 hours? Some of the books that are in the "special genres" have longer word counts than books in other genres that can be used freely provided they have 100 pages.

I read Three Plays: Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth, and The Matchmaker. I found word count for Our Town which is 18,000+ but can't get word counts for the other two plays. I would think the word count for this 496 page book would be more than a 100 page book. But yet we can't use it without a word count because the MPG is Plays. : (

I have a book The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Classic Stories but because it has a MPG of cookbook it's not allowed. BUT it's not a "true cookbook". It does have recipes but it has factual information and stories along with the recipes. Would this be an exception?

I'm just trying to figure out some of the justification and logic of why/how some books/MPGs work and others don't.

Woohoo - weekend here!

Next week is the Dewey's Reverse-Read-a-thon starting 8 pm EST time on Friday Night and ending Saturday at 8 pm - excited on that. Wanting to get a lot of reading done this weekend also - and that pesky floor and cleaning.

Fortunately Thriftbooks finally sent me a notification Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls has come in for the Ghoul Hunters series. We can use later if needed for whatever, I'm on book 5 of the series and want to keep climbing till 10.

I don't have much left of Anatomy of a Murder (kind of boring), and almost done with Mickey Haller's The Fifth Witness (very good). I have the other two of the series waiting to read later, they're gripping and good page counts. Going to pair up Fifth witness with a number book --- I ordered the rest of the Elizabeth Peter's books I was missing that are part of the Jacqueline Kirby series. I grew up loving her gothic Barbara Michaels fiction and do have some of her Amelia Peabody - but for some reason my interest in those so far have been mixed. The Seventh Sinner is the first of the JK series which will do a pair, and also some old fashioned Michaels/Peters sounds good - it's been too long!

With some re-reads of vintage ya Christopher Pike, going to do Last Act re-read, which will work for stage on the cover for props of the ballroom. I'm going to do the Reverse Harem (those can be quick reads and enjoyable but sometimes oh-so-cheesy) that Louise read for the Calliope first for me in that category.

I have some other planned but won't reserve any more as I don't know when I'll get to what and in which order. This is just the weekend focus.

For now. 0_0

I don't know that I can really give you justification OR logic, but hopefully an explanation none the less.

In group challenges that I captained here years ago, there were always threads in the Captain's group for the MODs to rule on exceptions to page counts or whether books worked for tasks. It was A LOT of extra work for them and, to be honest, it was a lot of extra work on the captains. Putting this blanket rule into play removed that and made things a lot smoother for mods and captains.

You're absolutely right in your assessments - A Heart's Disguise probably isn't 30,000 words, I have zero doubt that Three Plays would meet the 30,000 word requirement (I scoured the internet trying to prove this one but also only came up with the word count for Our Town), and The Little House Cookbook probably also has enough words. There will ALWAYS be outliers and sometimes it's an outlier on the side of the rule that doesn't benefit us. It's definitely not a perfect rule - but the line had to be drawn somewhere.

message 1240: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I just realized I have NO idea what I'm reading next, LOL.

I currently have Second First Impressions and Malibu Rising in audio from the library.

I have Reclaim the Stars: 17 Tales Across Realms & Space and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants that will be "available soon" per Libby.

Then I have nine books that I could get in the next 2 weeks - and I'll likely prioritize Ariadne, The Shadow Rising, and The Fires of Heaven.

The Shadow Rising, The Fires of Heaven and Lord of Chaos will get us a #4, #5, #6 for series chains. I'm not sure that I'll get book 7 by the end of the challenge - it's currently estimating 6 weeks, but we'll see what happens!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Vicky I understand that problem lol

Louise | 3331 comments Just to clarify with series chains:

They don't have to be read in order, but there can't be any gaps. #3 #4 #5 #6 is fine but #4 #5 #7 #8 wouldn't be.

They can start at any point and we can have as many chains as we want as long as there are at least 4 books in the chain.

message 1247: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments @Jax - Yes the squares follow the usual spell it out rules where The/A(n) are optional. I had asked that question to the mods yesterday before I assumed anything.

message 1248: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Overall Status

This is all the numbers stuff that I always think is fun, but take it all with a grain of salt because we're all playing this for fun!

We're currently in 6th place (the spreadsheet says 5, but Achilles needs to fix a formula to get their monster points onto the status spreadsheet which will bump them up to 2nd place). Achilles, Electra, Pandora and Penelope slayed at the monster mini - with all of them having at least 1100 points over us, it'll be difficult to catch up because I suspect they'll all complete the newest mini as well - so big page counts are huge for this last stretch!

We've started moving low page count books out of the main spreadsheet - we may add them back in later, but at the rate we're reading it's likely we won't have room to. What this means is that the standing we have on the Challenge Status spreadsheet is the standing we're at.

Inspiration Mini Challenge

We have 175 books left to read until we hit the cap and we need 166 books to complete the new mini, so we don't have a ton of wiggle room for books that don't work for any of the tasks if we want to complete in. Granted, the mini itself has tons of room for creativity and interpretation - so it shouldn't be hard to find a place for the majority of our books.

That said, the more information you can give on the book you're reading and what muses it will fit for, the better. Don't worry about the specific task indicators (U1, S1, etc) as long as you note the muse that it works for. As an example, the last book I finished was The Dragon Reborn and I'd record something like this:

Urania (#3), Calliope (Kelsi), Clio, Euterpe ("He took some old clothes the Sienarans had hangin out to dry, and his flute..." p81, "i'll dance with a girl with eyes of brown, or a girl with eyes of green..." song lyrics p302), Terpsichore ("Perrin did not recognize the nearly round white fish with red stripes, but they smelled good." p431)

I think the "hardest" part of this mini is going to be the comedy/tragedy writing and I already see some books planned in other areas that might be good options to pull into this depending on what direction the stories take. So the more info we have about the books we're reading the more room we have to play! :)

message 1249: by Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (last edited Jul 16, 2022 05:17PM) (new)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Sounds good. Most of my remaining page count books are going to be larger page counts. Finished a smaller one today that fits for a task and that was in the mood to re-read. Have one more than isn't huge page count but that was going to read and works for a pair, but it leads to other books in the same series with slightly higher page counts. Will try to mainly prioritize larger pages though.

Thanks for breakdown on the points. I had realized we had done low on the monsters in comparison to other teams and figured that may come back to bite us, but again this is for fun and the monsters repetitiveness was hard to stay excited about for me personally much.

As always, having a blast with TT though!! :)

I don't think the stories will be that hard and can work with a lot of leftover books personally. I do have some not fitting elsewhere I was going to add later as I'm reading them, for now wasn't want to reserve more than I already did as I have reserved quite a bit already!

Did finish two of my reserved so far for the minis, just finished Last act, and will do some more reading tonight.

message 1250: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments On the back of what Vicky has said a few pointers with regards to “claiming” slots.

Each book read will need to fit a mini task or be used in the super mini, with that in mind books may be moved and slotted where they best fit.

Urania:
We can either build
1 chain of 16 or a combination of chains with a minimum of 4 books.

Polyhymnia:
We will ask for books beginning and ending with certain letters once we have one to build from

Erato:
These need to be creative so ideally different pairs. The same book can be read by two different team members.

Calliope:
The muses want to see variety and not all BOM’s
