Stacey | 897 comments Just noticed that for the newest monster you put down one of my books for sorceress (Q4). It doesn't have that. I removed that one and you may want to consider moving the other if there is a book that fits multiple there.

I did read the Witch's Heart which works for Q3 and Q4.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I should be done with Plum Island this evening, which will work for 500-650 page for the new monster, Scylla

If someone beats me to it, feel free and can bank for a future island or something.

We have one in the bank for pg counts.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Great, mine can be reserved then for more banks.

I'm hoping to get a lot of reading done this weekend once clocked out. Made no plans other than housework and being around, unlike last weekend. Tonight - facial, wine, and reading. Have to work some more hours but in good spirits. High rain forecast tonight, so yay. It's 96 in Florida today 0_0

Plum Island is going good - it's my second Nelson Demille book but the tone of this one is different than The General's Daughter. I like the character. Have more in the series but not the second, don't believe.

I am in the mood for a new one that was on my planned list with the Mickey Haller series, so may start the fourth today in the series. Those are fun reads and good page counts.

I also am over 85% done into the second of the Cainsville series by Kelley Armstrong, so looking forward to completing it.

I need to start Ararat pretty soon as that's my in-person book club choice next month - it has snow on the cover and a mountain, so it fits for the monster banks once I start and finish it.

I finally finished the anthology for Skeleton Crew yesterday. Was not as good as I remembered unfortunately :/ Since I am finally done with the Gunslinger, can start the second book in the Dark Tower series soon - they are not fast reads but have good page counts.

I am ready since finishing the first two in the Felix Castor series to start the third in the series soon, those are good reads so far and also good page counts.

Most of the books I'll be reading will be high page counts other than a few smaller ones for challenges if we get stuck, and Ararat is over 300 pages but under 4, so that's a bit smaller.

Anyone else have exciting plans for the weekend or reading anything good?

Trinia | 2503 comments Sounds like a good plan Erin. Is it Hot by you? We are melting here in Texas :(

Working on a few random audiobooks. But tonight hubs and I are heading into Dallas for the Colbie Calliat concert! Can't wait, havent been to a live show in too long!

Might get some more reading done this weekend when we return.

Happy Friday y'all!

My aunt moved back to Texas and keeps telling me it's like 106-107 there 0_0

Florida has gotten up to 95 and 96, which is miserable. Thankfully it generally rains here a decent amount to cool things down and I'm hoping the same can be said for tonight.

Have fun at the concert!!

Louise | 3331 comments New Monster
It’s back

Polyphemus (Cyclops)

Polyphemus has been seen on your lands, searching for a new optometrist. Maybe he can be pacified with a good recommendation for an in-network doctor. Very hard to kill but can be distracted with sheep. He loves his sheep. Also, might distract him by discussing what a complete dink Ulysses really is despite his fame.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 500 and 650 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book that takes place on an island.
3.) Read a book where a character engages in some sort of trickery (your interpretation).
4.) Read a book with sheep AND people on the cover.
5.) Read a book whose MC is a farmer.

message 915: by Stacey (last edited Jun 24, 2022 09:19AM) (new)

Stacey | 897 comments Here is a great book with a farmer: When All Is Said

It has become a favorite, it is the story of an old Irish farmer as he is retiring and leaving his farm. So good, and a great audiobook. Unfortunatley, no sheep on the cover. I'll reread it when I'm done with my current book if we still need it but my current book is over 800 pages so it will take me a day or two (or three).

Or I'll read this, it looks like it has both.
The Sheep Queen by Thomas Savage

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Well, Plum Island does work for the island and page count for the repeat monster, as well as trickery (that one isnt hard). Not for Farmer or the sheep though. Will see other things I have time to read in between books this weekend, think I did scope out some that fit that are easier reads on some of these.

message 917: by Jax (last edited Jun 24, 2022 11:36AM) (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments Looks like between Stacey and Erin our newest monster is covered. I'm going to read Master and Margarita and Witch's Heart this weekend while looking for something to cover our only uncovered task (someone gets lost).

As much as we keep getting Minotaur I may just start on Gone With the Wind or Eye of the World.

Otherwise, it is finally breaking 80 here this weekend so will probably be getting some sun and doing outdoor things. One of the rare weekends that isn't booked with kids and stuff. Some friends are getting together to play Gloomhaven (we have an off/on campaign) so I will be joining them for that.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Sounds fun on the game, Jax, haven't heard of that one!

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments Happy Friday!!!!

@ Erin--I love organizing books too. I'm finding books that I forgot about or didn't even know I had. Sounds like you have a great weekend planned out--hopefully lots of rest, relaxation and reading. My 3 R's lol

@Trinia How exciting. I haven't been to a live show in a long time either. Have fun and be safe : )

@Stacey Thanks for the book recommendation : ) Not that I need any more on my TBR. At least when I look at my TBR I have lots of different options.

@Jax When the wheel gets spun for us the odds must be set to a 75% chance of getting a minotaur. I vote for Gone with the Wind lol I keep that one on my bookshelf and pull it out every so often and read it.

Not much going on here this weekend. It's so hot here too. Two days ago we set a new record high with 101 for June 22. The last time we hit 100 was July 8, 2012. The humidity is so bad too.

I'm still working on organizing my books. It's probably going to take a couple more days to get this project done. Taking me a little longer since I'm trying to put all my books on a GR shelf.

When I first started working from home years ago, started a project in living room to take all books down, restructure, dust--- I'm so lazy and procrastinate it took me months, but was fun.

And yes, so awful on heat. I MAY go swimming in our community pool tomorrow depending on mood and if it rains. Hoping it rains a lot tonight but you never know.

message 921: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments @Saturndoo...the funny thing is I found a copy of GWTW on Monday at a used bookstore while looking for something else. So it's sitting here on my literal TBR shelf. On the other hand years and years (and years) ago I remember playing a MMO with some people who all had characters from the WoT series and kept saying how wonderful it was so it's also been on my TBR forever.

message 922: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Every so often I get the need to take all my books down and reorganize. It's always fun, but it usually takes me weeks.

Reading wise: I started The Witching Hour which would count for an over 800+ book when I'm sure we get the Minotaur again. I forgot how slow this book is in the beginning, lol.

I also started the audio for Witch's Heart but I'm not really feeling it yet. I'm going to try and push through for the points.

message 923: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a pretty fun weekend planned, it's the first hot weekend we've had so going to check out a couple of local festivals and spend some time at the beach. Hoping to get some reading time in as well!

message 924: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Hello again, team. Hope everyone is going to have a good weekend!

I finally finished Fevered Star, which was an excellent read! I probably would have finished forever ago if I had been in the right head space, haha. Still, it can fit quite a few monster tasks, so hopefully it'll help us defeat some monsters. I have it all updated on the spreadsheet.

I should also finally finish The Witch's Heart tonight and get that updated. Yay for BOM and DQ writing points!

As for this weekend, I have to work, but usually it's pretty slow on the weekends, so perhaps I can squeeze in some reading time.

message 925: by Tati (new)

Tati | 1350 comments Just updated the spreadsheet. And considering how the Minotaur seems to love us so much, I can jump on the Hardheaded wagon

message 926: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Sad news! I went to find bull headed in the text of Eye of the World and it turns out that they were actually saying WOOL headed. Sooo not quite the 5 task wonder it sounded like. :(

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments What on earth is wool headed?!

I have failed at reading plans tonight. Had group bible study with friends since they cancelled last night and hung out with mom a bit afterwards. We drank wine and now I'm a bit tipsy. We watched news on supreme court ruling - today will go down in history, pretty huge

I do plan on reading some tonight though, hoping to finish plum island before falling asleep

Louise | 3331 comments Good morning all. Happy Saturday. We have had a week of high temps which finally broke yesterday. Today my BF, her husband and I are off to the beach.

I keep looking at my physical bookshelves saying I really need to organize and sell/donate the ones I’ve read to open up space but the thought makes me cringe.

@Vicky shame that it isn’t a one monster book, in answer Erin’s question it’s a British saying to describe a person as confused or muddled.

@Erin Just caught up on stateside events, surprised that this hasn’t been picked up by our media channels. I fear for the repercussions this will have on women’s health and emotional well-being.

Cindy | 152 comments Hey all, this week has been crazy and I haven’t been able to get much reading done at all. Me and my husband are unexpectedly moving very quickly and have lost our childcare. Between trying to find somewhere to live and someone to watch my child when we’re working it has been very stressful and crazy. Sorry I haven’t had much reading to contribute

Honestly same here. I donated ten to a used book sale and another five to a little free library and even though I know I'll probably never read them again, I still almost regret it.

Let me go and update

message 936: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments A new monster

Charybdis

Charybdis has been spotted close to your shores and endangering ships heading for the harbor. If you manage to defeat this monster be prepared to answer "how are you still alive" every time you tell the story. The monster is interested in helping you reach your childhood dream of finding what's in Davy Jones's Locker.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Author's name (first or last) starts with one of the letters in POOL.
3.) Read a book where the MC is forced to make a hard choice (your interpretation).
4.) Read a book with "fig" in the title or text.
5.) Read a book where the characters take a boat trip (of any type).

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments Can we combine lines 350 and 285 and kill off this one?

message 938: by Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (last edited Jun 25, 2022 04:42PM) (new)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I finally read some (busy day of fun) and finished Plum Island

I put it for three spots for O: Polyphemus, but move it if needed

It also works for the monster Charybdis for:
Read a book where the MC is forced to make a hard choice (your interpretation)
and
Read a book where the characters take a boat trip (of any type)

Now about to make some cheeseburgers and do some more reading.

message 939: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Jax - I don't think 350 is read yet, but we definitely can when it's been read!

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments Vicky wrote: "Jax - I don't think 350 is read yet, but we definitely can when it's been read!"

Darn didn't see that. That's what I get for reading on my phone.

message 941: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Just throwing it out there, Fevered Star works for Charybdis tasks 3 and 5 (makes a hard choice and take a boat trip) and it's already read. I dunno if it's been used for another monster or not.

message 942: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments Good morning all, will get an update up this morning with how we are doing and get a mini update too. Need to have breakfast first though.

message 943: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 897 comments I just finished The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois. It works for Charybdis 1, 3, and 5. It also works for many other things. Probably for farmer (plantations) and for lost if you are creative (MC lost to drugs). All but the lost are listed.

I'll start Sheep Queen today and will finish quickly (for me at least)

message 944: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments @Trinia your book insomnia works for 2,3 and 4 of Charybdis can you add how on the mini planning sheet.

@Stacey can you add how the your book works for #5 on the mini planning sheet.

message 945: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Pretty slow day at work, so just dropping by to check in. Currently reading Juniper & Thorn and The Ballad of Black Tom. Not sure if I'll be counting the latter towards TT since it's a novella and not worth many points, but I promised my daughter I'd read it with her this month. Having a good time, so far!

Saw that was have another challenge coming up as I was poking through the announcement post! Looks like it's gonna be an interesting one.

I hope everyone is having a good Sunday :)

message 946: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I finished The Most Eligible Lord in London that works for plain on the cover. Could also work for the farmer task or the own a cow task I think I saw.

message 947: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments The new competition looks fun. Maybe a little tricky to set up but will be easy to do week to week I would think.

Still plodding through the Master and Margarita. Halfway through the Red Pyramid which I'm hoping to finish today or tomorrow. Won't have a lot of reading time this week so if I can just finish those two I'd be pretty happy.

message 948: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Hey Team! I'm back from my trip. Just did a little organizing for the mini but there's been no movement. Here's what we're looking at:

Nemean Lion
T17 Set in Africa // Akata Woman, Vicky (Will finish tonight or tomorrow AM)

Minotaur
Long story short on this one - if someone has a book where the MC gets lost, we could finish the rest from the bank. Otherwise, I'll be done Eye of the World probably on Wednesday.

Scylla
T82 Body of Water on the Cover // The Fire Pit, Louise
T85 Title Contains FIRE // The Fire Pit, Louise

Polyphemus
T89 Sheep & People on Cover // Sheep Queen, Stacey
T90 MC is a Farmer // Sheep Queen, Stacey

Charybdis
Just waiting on Trinia to check in and confirm justifications on how Insomina fits T92-T94 and we can turn this in. :)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments Hey everyone!!! It's Sunday Funday : )

The reorganization of my books is still a WIP. So far I have gone through 350 books--323 I kept the other 27 I'm going to put in the LFL's close to me or give me to my step granddaughter. Now that all the misc stacks are done, I'm going to start tackling the bookshelf today. My hopes are to have all my books in one general area LOL by the time I'm done.

My oldest step-brother(mom's side) passed away on June 17th. His Celebration of Life service is coming up this Friday. We have had a lot of phone calls and company the last few days. So been a little busy with all that.

My dog--Murphy, 11 yrs old, has been sick the last couple days. He's been getting me up at all hours of the night so not getting much sleep. I called the vet Monday to refill Murphy's meds before he ran out on Wednesday. Several days and multiple phone calls later, the medicine was finally ready for pick up today : ( Hopefully Murphy will get to feeling better.

In my down time, I have gotten a little bit of reading done. I will get the spreadsheet updated sometime today. I'm going to work on my bookshelf for a bit and then hopefully read the rest of the evening.

@Erin LOL I totally get you. I try not to procrastinate when I start a project, but sometimes it's a bigger job than what it seems. I have several things to get done before the grandkids come on Friday. We'll see how it all works out

@Jax Nice find!! It's funny how we find other books when we are looking for something in specific. And of course you can't help but buy them all lol I cleaned up my TBR list a few months ago and I can't believe how long some of the books have been on there. Someday, maybe, they will get read. : )

@Cindy Oh no so sorry. Sounds very stressful but I hope things work out for you. Keeping you in my thoughts.

@Celia & Louise I'm probably going to regret getting rid of the books, but hopefully I won't remember what they were. They are books that I've already read and probably won't read again. Some of them I don't even know why I have them as they hold no appeal or interest to me now lol I am keeping a few that I have read because they are favorites that I will read again.

@Vicky glad you made it safely back home from your trip. Hope you had a good time.

message 950: by Tati (new)

Tati | 1350 comments I'm currently reading Hardheaded, which can be banked for when we inevitably get another Minotaur.

After that, I still don't have anything planned, so I can be nudged to read something more specific if need be.
