60s 'things to do' book that was also a story

I read a children's book when I was in primary school between 1969 and 1972, and it's stuck with me. It was a book of things to do but it was structured like a story. At least part of it was set outdoors and I remember a father teaching his children how to do various things including, I think, making things and woodcrafts. Some of the books at our school were pretty old so it could have been published in the 60s or even the 50s. It wasn't a picture book, it was more of a story book. I know this is very vague but if these few details spark a memory for anyone then I'd like to know what the book was.
