Elaine | 3 comments I read this book when I was about 12 in the 1970s. It was about a boy growing up in the Salford or Manchester area in the late 1800s. His dad had a small shop . He lived with his parents and a sibling.
His dad had a sister who was rather a snob.
It was kind of political- the family discussed how people lived, self-imporivement, Cobbett. Sounds dull but it wasn't. His dad sent him on a message to see the aunt across the town which was quite exciting for him.
I am sure there was an accident- possibly to his sibling who was injured- a head injury.
Someone died - possibly the sibling.
He was a really thoughtful boy- looked at life around him in this working class bit if Manchester and considered how people lived and his dad's views as opposed to his aunt's. His dad was a very humane man, decent, hard-working.
I can not for the life of me remember the title. I want to say something like 'A Likely Lad' but could be totally wrong.

Thank you very much. I have ordered a copy and am hoping it is the book- Would be great if it is. The name of the boy seems familiar. Thanks again.
