A sculptor lives in poverty. His wife badgers him to find honest work at the quarry. He's approached by a one-eyed (or one-eared?) ghost who claims he was buried in an unmarked grave and wants the sculptor to carve a statue of him and his dog as a grave marker. He wants to be posed holding a baby and pressing a cup to its lips. He promises a lot of money for the work. The sculptor comes through, even though his wife thinks he's gone mad carving something so grotesque. He places the statue over the grave and the ghost pays him. When he asks the ghost why he wanted to be shown feeding a baby, the ghost laughs and says he wasn't feeding the baby, but poisoning it. He'd been an assassin in life and the money he got for killing the child was the same money he used to pay the sculptor. Horrified, the artist throws the money into a swamp and resolves to go to work at the quarry the next day.

I read this in the 80s, but it's probably older.
