Courtney | 2960 comments Karen had so many I wanted to read! I narrowed it down to like five and then picked Playing to Win (Play by Play, #4) by Jaci Burton . I can't decide if I like Cole or not yet. He's so pissy all the time. I'm waiting for whatever the big reveal will be to explain it. Love Savannah, though. I think Jaci Burton really writes heroines well. I've loved all her ladies.

She passed away a few years ago an awful car accident. It was posted everywhere for a while. It was quite sad. There's a place for her fans to post goodbyes or to share what her books meant to them on her website. Not sure if it is still up though. It was there when she first passed away.

Yes it is. I'd never read anything by her before Becoming a Vincent, so went to her GR page to check out what else she'd written and if there was anything about future Wild Ones books...saw the date of death on her profile so had to look into it further (just last summer actually, but she'd taken a break from writing a couple of years before that and hadn't gotten back to it yet).

Review:

Cole is a football player who needs an image adjustment. He's been let go from several teams for his attitude on and off the field, and Savannah is brought in to fix him.

I liked Savannah right away, but Cole was a bit harder. It wasn't until about halfway through that he seems to soften enough to be likable. I never really felt like there was any reason for him to be the "bad boy", so I didn't really get his character. It's mentioned that he was let go from his first team, so then he was afraid of building relationships again, but it just didn't feel like enough for me.

This is a very "real life" romance. No drama or craziness, just two people being pretty normal. I liked this, but it was missing that oomph for me. It ended up dragging in some spots, and just didn't grab my attention like the other books in the series have. Not bad, but not my favorite.

Chan | 5139 comments i just finished The Charm Offensive. It was really good! Seriously a great read! I don't buy the interracial aspect b/c the author does a poor job of illustrating the differences of the MCs. She doesn't take the time to talk about Dev's indian background, so that aspect is such a waste.

However, the way she tells the LGBT story and touches on mental is so good.

Courtney | 2960 comments My book is so stupid!!! But I'm already 100 pages in, so I'm going to push through. But it's stupid. I don't think the author even read it before publishing it because the MCs change what their relationship is so frequently 🤦‍♀️

Review:

This is one of those books where I have to wonder if the author even read through it before publishing. Justin and Elise flipflop so much that it's hard to tell if the author even remembered what she wrote in each chapter.

First, we open with Justin confessing in his internal monologue that he's sick of all his random hookups and is obsessed with Elise, his best friend and roommate's little sister. Elise also happens to have a crush on Justin, and that night they hook up. The next morning, Elise is worried that Justin might regret it because he's a manwhore, and when Justin sees that she looks nervous, decides to pretend he doesn't remember that they hooked up .....for THREE freaking months.

description

And during that time, despite having "feelings" for Elise, he continues to be a manwhore and be with other women, but it's supposed to not be a huge deal because he doesn't bring them back to his bed that he slept with Elise in.

description

Finally, after three awkward months of not talking (and somehow Owen the brother and friend doesn't notice), they finally talk, and Justin admits that he does remember. He says that he's sick of sleeping around and might be ready for something more serious, so the two of them start dating...

description

Nope. They start a no-strings, friends-with-benefits thing because that makes total sense after Justin admitted that he wanted to try something more meaningful than the one night stands he's been having and Elise is already in love with him.

Then we have more back and forth. Are they in a relationship or not? Sometimes?

Of course, the first night Elise and Justin were together, she was a virgin. But since it didn't go well, Justin decides to redo her de-virginizing...twice. In the first one, he apologizes, and does the whole "you're so tight", "tell me if it hurts" yada yada yada, as if he forgot that he already banged her silly with no issue. And then he comes back another time with flowers and wine and stuff and says it's because he wants to make up for taking her virginity badly. Did he forget he already did that? They already had sex between the first time and that time? So weird.

And then a whole ridiculous five pages where Elise is mortified that she accidentally asked Justin to buy her tampons.

OMG tampons! I'm so embarrassed! /s

description

I like my romances to feature adults. Nothing embarrassing about a dang tampon.

Anyway....

Eventually, Justin wants to come clean with Owen because he thinks he really wants to be with Elise. He puts out a hypothetical, which Owen shuts down, but Justin continues to see Elise. Then, in like the next chapter, Elise offers him a key to her place, and he LOSES HIS MIND! Boy dumps her right then because he suddenly doesn't believe relationships can work and he'll probably cheat on her in a year or whatever anyway.

description

But instead of walking away, Elise says he's the best man she's ever known and that they need to talk about the "break up" later.

description

And the next time they talk, they're just back together and suddenly love each other. Then we have three chapters where they go see their families for some reason. The End.

I just didn't get this. The "relationship" was awful. Justin was a douchy manwhore. There's no real story here, and it meanders to an ending through what feels like three unnecessary epilogues. Hard pass.

message 729: by Chan (new)

Chan | 5139 comments But how do you have a redo with taking someone's virginity?

I read a book where the heroine caught the guy she was dating in the club with his hands up some other woman's dress. They locked eyes and he kept doing what he was doing.

The hero made it the heroine's fault b/c she wasn't supposed to be there, but also he was trying to push her away to keep her safe. How contradictory?! LOL that book made me so frustrated.

There are other ways to push me away and/or keep safe. Feeling up someone else not knowing I was going to be there doesn't seem like the most efficient way.

~KarenH~ | 11412 comments That's the type of book that makes me really hesitant about a lot of YA/NA. Some are fine, but a lot of them just come across as ridiculous and/or childish to me.

Courtney | 2960 comments Chan wrote: "But how do you have a redo with taking someone's virginity? "

He felt bad because he didn't know she was a virgin the first time, so he had to have the typical "taking virginity sex scene" with her. You know, lots of reassurance and talking about how big his piece is but it'll still fit 🙄. I guess the author likes writing that type of scene so much that she wanted to do it twice 🤷🏼‍♀️.

That kind of stuff drives me crazy. I don't mind if the hero is with someone else before he's with the heroine, but once he says he's into her or they get together for the first time, then dude needs to be faithful or I don't buy the relationship.

Yeah. They read as immature. And maybe i was the exact same way when i was much younger, but my brain has refused to hold any of those memories and I don't remember acting like that. So, now it seems so implausible that people would do things like that.

lol the author wanted to write it twice and found a way to create that scene for her readers again.

I don't have a hard and fast rule about cheating in books. I don't like it, but depending on how it's written, I could still end up liking the book. But the one I described was just awful. I think the author was trying to create a lovable jerk, but she left him with no redeeming qualities.

Courtney | 2960 comments I had to quit mine. It was sooooooo boring! The whole storyline is about the hero maybe going to be court maritaled for desertion, and his old boss stealing his idea for some sort of shooting, training range. All while he's trying to invent a better bullet. 70 pages in and the MCs have had one conversation. Just not feeling it.

I found Forever a Bridesmaid (Always a Bridesmaid #1) by Courtney Hunt , so I'm going to give that a try instead.
