Thomas Broder | 7 comments A young adult novel from the 1990s (prob c.1995) about a man escaping from a Russian Gulag. He's chased by trackers initially but escapes and lives in the wilderness (Siberia?) for a while - most of book is about him surviving in the wilderness. There's a military plane crash with maybe a scientist carrying something radioactive, I can't really remember details.

Eventually he comes out of the wilderness and is arrested, but the commander (who is the estranged father of a friend from the gulag) helps him escape and start a new life.

Thomas Broder | 7 comments Wow - that does sounds very similar! But no it's not the one.
The book I'm thinking of is young adult and the main character is Russian not American
