A young adult novel from the 1990s (prob c.1995) about a man escaping from a Russian Gulag. He's chased by trackers initially but escapes and lives in the wilderness (Siberia?) for a while - most of book is about him surviving in the wilderness. There's a military plane crash with maybe a scientist carrying something radioactive, I can't really remember details.

SPOILEREventually he comes out of the wilderness and is arrested, but the commander (who is the estranged father of a friend from the gulag) helps him escape and start a new life.

Wow - that does sounds very similar! But no it's not the one. The book I'm thinking of is young adult and the main character is Russian not American

All these sounds like interesting reads - thanks for commenting. None of them are the book that I'm after though!
