I read this book sometime in middle or high school, so it's been 10+ years. I believe it must have been a teen romance because of the age I was reading it at and I sort of remember the main character having an interest in a girl.

THIS BIGGEST thing I remember though is that it spoke about how the main character loved atoms and spoke about how everything is made of reused atoms, atoms can never be destroyed or created, sometime during the story (middle or near the end) the news is out that scientists have either created the first atom or destroyed the first atom? Maybe the first time ever an atom has died?
