A kid is picked up by Federal US troops at a base in California and tells the doctor who is treating his broken arm that the Christian Fascist dudes who are trying to take over the US are coming and the small outpost needs to be evacuated, and he convinces the Commanding officer to do so but it was a trap and they were all killed, with the main character, the kid, doing it to get his brother inhalers
From there he goes back to base where he trains dogs and one night escapes by stealing a truck i believe he found while searching for strays to train. He also had a dog he made friends with
He then travels through Nevada to the border with Idaho i think or he might’ve went through Utah were he’s caught by some local resistance fighters who are like 15 led by a girl named Kate I believe, she was described as having a square chin
They then go to her town in the said state and end up on the run in a helicopter crash which puts Kate and MC at a rich kids estate in Montana. Here MC realizes that the only reason the civil war happened is cuz rich people got way too rich and the peaceful retreat is like only there for the rich kids, which he and Kate then leave.
My memory of this part is really fuzzy but I think he fights in a battle gets captured and is forced back into training dogs at the main fascist base and Kate is taken there to do stuff I don’t remember. After that a coalition invaded the US in support of the Federal Government and the leader of the fascists tried to launch the Nukes which he’d been using as a deterrent but MC stops him and escapes with Kate and his brother who was reassigned there
After that Kate gives MC her number and in another stolen truck they drive to their old home and find their parents went to Canada and MC sets out to find them and his brother goes back to become a fascist Christian priest thing and the story ends
