Old Scifi Book about walking on a dimensenial path

This was a science fiction book I read in the early 90's I believe. It was about a group of friends that found an alien of sorts. From what I remember it was a large snail or slug? They were helping it get back to where it belonged and had to follow a specific path to do so. As they walked the path, each step took them into a different reality or dimension that was just slightly different than the one they were in before. At some point they got into a fight, or were being chased by animals similar to the new friend and the aliens were amazed at how great the people were at throwing rocks instead of spitting them in the rock fight.

Chaos Mode by Piers Anthony? That is book 3 in the Mode series but that's the one with the slug/snail creature. The blurb that is on Goodreads is not helpful but the blurb for book 1 (Virtual Mode) describes how the characters travel on a path between alternate universes/dimensions. The slug/snail thing is named Burgess and I think it was because he looked like a fossil creature from the Burgess Shale, if I'm remembering correctly.
