Michaela | 262 comments I recently found a German version of Lord Peter short stories, but as far as I remember they´re more than 12 - at least a big book. Is there a list of the stories we´re reading somewhere?

I think Sayers is a gifted short story writer and I wish she had done more. I have read them several times and I see no reason to think I won't read them again in the future. I think Uncle Meleager is my favorite. She doesn't need a murder to write an intriguing story.

Rosemarie | 383 comments It sounds like you've been having a very busy summer, Adrian-and lots of fun.
I'm starting the book later this week.

Hi Michaela. If you mean, what short stories will we be reading, they are these :-
Lord Peter Views the Body (12 Short stories) - 1928 1 Synopsis 1.1 The Abominable History of the Man with Copper Fingers 1.2 The Entertaining Episode of the Article in Question 1.3 The Fascinating Problem of Uncle Meleager's Will 1.4 The Fantastic Horror of the Cat in the Bag 1.5 The Unprincipled Affair of the Practical Joker 1.6 The Undignified Melodrama of the Bone of Contention 1.7 The Vindictive Story of the Footsteps That Ran 1.8 The Bibulous Business of a Matter of Taste 1.9 The Learned Adventure of the Dragon's Head 1.10 The Piscatorial Farce of the Stolen Stomach 1.11 The Unsolved Puzzle of the Man with No Face 1.12 The Adventurous Exploit of the Cave of Ali Baba
Hangmans Holiday (4 Short Stories)- 1933 1.1 Image in the Mirror 1.2 The Incredible Elopement of LPW 1.3 The Queen’s Square, 1.4 The Necklace of Pearls
In The Teeth of the Evidence ( 2 Short Stories) - 1939 1.1 In The Teeth of the Evidence 1.2 Absolutely Everywhere
Striding Folly ( 3 Short Stories) - 1973 1.1 Striding Folly 1.2 Haunted Policeman 1.3 Talboys

In the last three books above, there are other stories but they are not Lord Peter. The reading order for all the LP books is in message 3 way above.
Hope that helps.

Yes, I meant the short stories, sorry, not very clear. Thanks for the helpful information, Adrian! Will try to read the first 12 soon.

I must admit that I hadn't realised just how much fun the short stories she wrote are. I haven't read any of her non Lord Peter short stories, but maybe after this buddy read finishes, I will read a few.

Adrian | 631 comments Just a quick question for those reading along ? Do we need to grab an extra month to finish the short stories and allow people to catch up ?

Let me know your thoughts

message 111: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 383 comments I could use an extra month.

Adrian | 631 comments Ok, well I think given that a few people have answered in the affirmative, that we should have a months's Summer Holiday to allow people to catch up and get ready for 1st September when we will start The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club

I've updated post 3 to show all the months and the relevant books, as well as highlighting our month off.

@Jean , I hope that is all ok ?

C.J. (cjverburg) | 282 comments Thanks, Adrian! I'm still waiting for the book to arrive & am glad I won't miss this. It's years since I dipped back into Sayers's short stories, & a welcome change of pace.

message 120: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 262 comments Thanks Adrian, also for showing the months when we read certain books, as I won´t read them all. :)

No probs CJ, it helps me out as well, as I've been so busy. Hopefully I can reset everything and come back for September.

I have to agree Rosemarie, I think it is one the best and most enjoyable.

J.D. (hahahanope) | 3 comments Agreed! Talboy's was such a laugh-out-loud delight, and a capstone to Peter and Harriet's story together. :)

message 126: by Tara (new)

Tara | 53 comments Still behind, but still enjoying! I recently finished Unnatural Death and thought it was brilliant. I enjoyed that it was more of a race to track down the killer than figure out who it was.

Hi JD. we won't actually be getting to Talboys until July next year when we read Striding Folly .

No worries JD. We've only read the first book of short stories.

message 131: by C.J. (new)

C.J. (cjverburg) | 282 comments I'm really enjoying these stories! Sayers is such a fine writer. She seems unabashed here (unlike. the novels) about making Lord Peter a superhero, early 20th-century style. The wine-ID competition is a hoot! -- as is his command of incunabulae. The class prejudices are a bit chilling . . . & I suppose a useful reminder how far back in time that hierarchy goes.

I really enjoyed them as well CJ, especially as you say 'The Wine Tasting" competition, it was a real laugh.

message 133: by Adrian (new)

Adrian | 631 comments And I've no idea how it's happened, but here we are with only just over one week to go to the end of August and the resumption of our read.
We'll be resuming with the ever popular novel The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club.

Barbara K Just picked up a copy of The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Clubfrom the library, and plan to rejoin the buddy read this month.

Is this still going apace? Just wondering, as we're nearly a week into September (aargh!)

You can always take 2 months over one Adrian, or have a month's break - which is effectively the same :) It might be worth asking others.

Thanks Jean. I think the break we took in August has allowed a few people to catch up, but I'm sure if they want me to take another break ( maybe next month) they will let me know.

Thats great. I've only just started my read, and despite reading it 30 months ago, I'm really enjoying it again.
I think as she got into her characters , she got crisper and more focussed.
I hope all 3 of you enjoy this story

carolina | 119 comments I am in too!! I will start tomorrow. It will be a re-reading but I am sure I will enjoy it.

message 142: by Tara (new)

Tara | 53 comments My version of the The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club was a BBC dramatization, so I suspect that although its listed as unabridged, that it was not 100% faithful to the written book. However, Wimsey was played once again by the delightful Ian Carmichael, and it was an excellent listen. I found the roster of suspects all believable, and once again I wasn't able to figure out whodunnit before the end.

I do like some of the BBC dramatisations, so will have to look that one out, especially as its Ian Carmichael. Thanks Tara.

message 145: by Barbara K (new)

Barbara K Tara, I listened to the same version, and I think it was pretty consistent with my recollections of the book from reading it many years ago.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. As always, Sayers is clever with plotting and witty in her dialog. But as is also typical of her, she grounds her story in a reality that is often missing from other Golden Age authors.

Barbara K Good point, Tara. I was feeling the same way myself. It would have been easy, but she worked around it without diminishing the significance of the problem.

Ellen | 228 comments After my reread of this book I can't understand why it hasn't been one of my frequent rereads. Great story. I really like Marjorie Phelps.
