Plot -- In the specific book in what I remember to be a series—which wasn't #1—these kids found that their father had sealed the loose fence plank that led to the fantasy world.
I doubt this was the plot of the whole book, just one of the situations they faced, but they broke the replacement fence to try and recover their path to the world and found it simply lead to the neighbor lady's overgrown garden. If I recall correctly, they ended up finding out that once the portal is closed, another one opens somewhere else—happening to have opened inside a closet in one of their bedrooms.

Characters -- I don't remember much about the characters, only that there were 2, perhaps 3 siblings that lived with their mother and father in an average neighborhood with a cranky old neighbor.
