SOLVED. YA Fantasy about a boy who goes to a school for magic/ alchemy set in a somewhat older time, goes to military school with a war happening else where in the world, read it around 2018-2020 probably published earlier. [s]

So this boy goes to a military school of sorts, he has to learn about magic, their magic involve summoning circles and they had summoner, attacker, and maybe defense and healer class of users for it, there is also a war happening somewhere else in the world and that is what they are training for and are being prepared for. I remember one part of the book he goes to a church I think. Murders start to happen on campus and they worry for the safety. the student suspects a teacher if i remember right. i remember them pushing emphasis on having protection for the summoner since it takes time. He might gain a female friend that helps him investigate a mystery that could be happening. I remember that they said specifically they used chalk for the circles but other materials may be used. He does go out at night and runs into a possible murder happening and he follows the blood or paper trail and has to hide and that is the most detail I can remember about the book, i'm pretty sure it had a steam punk sort of theme maybe, that's what I saw in my head when I read it.
