There was an old book series I read that was about how genetic engineering had progressed to being able to engineer how your child would look before they are born, with no "defects" like poor eyesight etc. Even down to height. Medical care couldn't help the "naturals"; the rare children of the parents who refused engineering. In the book, a new and controversial technology has been created where a person's mind could be uploaded to a robotic body should any accidents occur.
The series follows a girl who was friends with a natural. They were both in an accident; her friend was paralyzed and unable to upload, while her family opted to upload her and deeply regretted it. Her glasses-wearing natural friend was furious with her, as he had always assumed he would be able to be uploaded --a process that made you virtually indestructible-- and their friendship ended.
She went on to run away with other uploaded teens, as they did not feel equal to their peers; in fact, they were ostracized by their old friends. The girl became a thrill seeker, but sometimes she didn't back up her new memories.
That's all I can remember. Anyone know the title of this book?
