Devoted in Death (Spoiler Zone)
When you think about how little time has gone by, you have to be amazed at the amount of people that are murdered in the Big Apple!I love it when Roarke goes so cool. I think part of the problem this time is that this guy is actually good looking.
Still, I felt there wasn't enough Roarke in this one. I just didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of you. I found FESTIVE and OBSESSION much more enjoyable.
I got a kick out of Eve learning how to pick locks from Roarke. There private time is very interesting.

I'm a little confused about a comment that Peabody made about wanting to go to the opera. I thought she did go to the opera with Charles back in their time together. Did I misinterpret her comment?
Sharon wrote: "I'm a little confused about a comment that Peabody made about wanting to go to the opera. I thought she did go to the opera with Charles back in their time together. Did I misinterpret her comment?"I agree. I thought she'd gone too.

It focuses more on the dynamics among the PD and how they work together then fall back into their own cases. I really like the whole squad and want to know more about them.

If I remember correctly McNabb mentioned he couldn't afford to take her to the things that Charles does like the opera. I can't remember the book though.
Jonetta wrote: "I love their dressing scenes. Her closet must now be pretty amazing."I love those too. It is funny how Eve is confused if she gets her outfit wrong or right. She is getting better though Roarke only makes enhancements he doesn't completely change her outfit these days.

I don't think it was the opera. I think it was the ballet. Charles said in Naked that he hated the opera.

Jonetta wrote: "Sharon wrote: "I'm a little confused about a comment that Peabody made about wanting to go to the opera. I thought she did go to the opera with Charles back in their time together. Did I misinter..."Oh that makes sense.
I found it. Eve and Peabody are talking about body types in Witness in Death. Peabody says that her body is like an opera singer. Eve asks if she goes to the opera now and Peabody says “I’ve been a few times. It’s okay.” She blew out a relieved breath when they reached the fourth floor and tried not to be irritated that Eve wasn’t winded. “Charles goes for that culture stuff.”Then Eve starts teasing her about juggling McNabb & Charles.
Later on in the story when McNabb is asking Roarke for advice on winning Peabody back he talks about how he doesn't know what she's interested in and tells Roarke about what they do together and then says she off with Monroe and back to the opera.
That's one of those continuity issues. Here's she's giving the impression it's a mediocre experience but in Devoted she wants to go. And, Charles admits in Naked he hates the opera.
Great job in finding it!

Maerhys wrote:RE: DEVOTED. I really loved this one. I think it's in my top ten of the series' novels. I loved all the stuff with Santiago, Carmichael, Baxter, and Trueheart, and I especially loved that Nora gave us time with the abductees because I came to truly care about them. Same with the first NYC victim Dorian. I loved, loved, LOVED Will Banner and I need him to transfer into the NYPSD immediately. Even more, I loved that there was none of the "hick cop in the big city" trope that is so played out. I didn't mind the lack of Rourke because when he showed up it made sense to the plot and I am not reading, primarily, for the Eve/Rourke romance. I would have loved to see Nadine covering the manhunt but it made more sense that she was still dealing with the events of OBSESSION. I agree buy can't say it's a favorite like that for me. But I do hope we see Banner again.

Honestly, I read first for the mystery and the outstanding character development. The Eve/Roarke romance is a bonus!

Me too! At least now after 41 books . I used to read them for Eve/Roarke but it started changing around book 20-30 .
Me too. I read for the characters and the plot secondary. It's nice that the series has a bit of everything for everyone.
Totally. It's extraordinary in itself for the long running series to not become redundant in story lines. There's a fresh outlook in every new book.

Nora is in a tough place, because there are so many books, she probably wants to mix it up so it doesn't become too stale, and yet, readers like to see certain things in each book.
As for me, I read them for Eve and Roarke, and all the other characters first. The mystery/crime is secondary.

To me this was one that was case focused. To me that is another way she keeps it going. Some books are more about the case even though she still has her characters evolve like to me Treachery and Creation was case driven book to me. Festive and Portrait was more about the characters to me.
I also agree that this series is special for all of us fans. We can all read the series and it fits what you love and romantic suspense whether the romance or the suspense. JDR really does great work.

lol that's ok . I got my audiobook but I won't start now ,I'm in the middle of something else.
Maerhys wrote: "I get around the opera continuity in thinking that Peabody is more interested in the opera for the theatricality of the experience rather than the actual music, and that's why the experience was on..."There are too many much better books out there. Even OBSESSION (which is one of my favorites) doesn't make the top 10 for me. I mean, when you have over 40 books, you really have to be selective for the top 10.
If I read this series for the mystery/suspense plot, I probably would've stopped long since. I also wouldn't feel such a need and compulsion to start and finish the books. It's Eve and Roarke and the characters.

Top ten favorites lists are subjective. What works for one member doesn't necessarily work for others because it's an individual choice, no wrong or right.
I think Maeryhs did an excellent job of outlining why this worked for her and why it makes her list. I find it helpful to understand that, no matter my opinion. It makes for a much more interesting discussion.

Jonetta, I didn't mean to say her choice wasn't valid. I meant to say that it is hard to compile a top 10 list when you have so many books. Also, I find that your memory may only think of more recent books. I was just trying to extend my part of the conversation. I'm sorry if I came across as intolerant, that was not my intention.
Still, DEVOTED just doesn't have a lot of the things I generally really like in the books. However, like Maerhys, I do like the literary device of showing us what the two abductees are going through.
I think if I was judging this book as a non-In Death mystery/suspense novel I would judge it higher. It's just my bar for In Death books is higher.
Finally got this off the wait list at library and nearly done! My thoughts so far. DeWinters - in the middle about her so far. Don't mind her. It's almost nice seeing someone that is strict in the rules now with everyone else at this point in the "circle" really skirting the line, if not questionably crossing that fine line.
Peabody - It is so great to see the growth in this character. So much more confidence! She's come a long way from the unsure, wanting so badly to please officer she was in the beginning.
Banner - Liked him, wasn't loving him though. (do like the first seeing Roarke scenes)
Love the other characters. Nadine gets a little cameo mention, and Feeney seems a cameo appearance :)
I really did like this one, maybe not my absolute favorite, but really good. It makes me want to go read the first couple books of the series! I don't know why, maybe cause the thoughts of character growth make me think of the start, but whatever it is, I have the urge!

Could I join you in that buddy read? I would love to read them all again and it would be fun doing it with like minded people:)
Absolutely Phrynne! We'd love to have you join us along with anyone else who wants to read the series. We're planning to read one book a month this time which will give us more flexibility in our reading schedules as well as more time for a good indepth discussion on each book. We'll open a thread for the BR & make plans soon.
Awesome Mdy! Glad to have you join us. I'll get our guidelines together & post something soon so you all can add your names to the list wanting to take this journey again. This is really the only series I can think of that I feel like starting over again as soon as I finish it. I think there are 7 of us now who plan to start it as a BR in Jan.
To our current Buddy Read Group: Are you all ready to start Devoted In Death? We'll use this thread but try not to scroll back through the posts as there are spoilers there. I hope to start this one sometime by the end of the week.
I will start later this week & try to be ready to discuss by next week.
Are you all signing up for our ID BR starting over in Jan.?

Though Mavis and some others were not included in the story, the focus on her squad was a delightful replacement. I have this feeling we'll see a lot of Mavis in the next stories with Bella's birthday coming up.
