I read it around 2012, but it seems a little older than that, maybe 90's. I believe in the tiny book, there was a whole world about little people, magic possibly involved. It would switch back between the boy's reality and the tiny book he was reading. There was a magnifying glass on the cover I believe. There was maybe something to do with playing cards or puzzles.

Is it The Solitaire Mystery by Jostein Gaarder? It shares the magnifying glass cover and playing cards (Please note this cover is not featured on Goodreads: https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-s...). Each card is the title of a chapter of a story that he is using to hunt down his family member.
