30.1 - Katrisa's Task: Dune

This task is in honor of one of my favorite book series - Dune. I read the series first when my 23 year old daughter was born. Reading Dune was how I passed the time in the middle of the night when I had to wake up and feed her. I am a fan of the original series as well as the books written by Frank Herbert’s son, Brian and Kevin J. Anderson.

This is a two book task.
Since most of the Dune books are long, one of your books must be 500+ pages and the combined page total must be at least 700 pages.

Select two options and read a book for each.
Required: Identify the option.

Option 1 - Arrakis, Dune, Desert Planet: The desert planet of Arrakis is the heart of the Dune universe.
Read a book with the word DESERT in the title or series title. Subtitles are excluded.

Option 2 - Tell me of the waters of your home world: The Atreides home world is the Planet Caladan - a lush watery world.
Read a book with a cover that depicts a natural body of water, such as a lake, river, or ocean. The body of water must be central to the scene and must be larger than a swimming pool. Underwater scenes work as long as they are natural water sources (no pool lane markers, tile edges, etc)
No Rest for the Dead by Andrew Gulli Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell Knife Creek (Mike Bowditch, #8) by Paul Doiron Swell Sailing the Pacific in Search of Surf and Self by Liz Clark
Required: Post the cover.

Option 3 - The Litany Against Fear: This is one of my favorite bits of literature and one that has made it into my personal lexicon
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Face your fears and read a book with an MPG of horror.

Option 4 - The Dune Universe: Read a book with one of the words from the titles in the Dune Universe books in the TITLE (subtitles excluded). Plural, singular and possessive forms are allowed (children/child). Please choose from the 19 primary works (Words not allowed OF or THE) Dune Universe
Required: State the source book title.

Option 5 - The Spice Melange - The spice melange is what makes the Dune universe tick. The word melange means mix. Read a book from this list Genre Bending Books
Required: State the page.

Option 6 - Let me finish for you! - Frank Herbert left the Dune series on a bit of a cliffhanger when he died. I am thankful that his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson not only finished the series, but wrote some amazing backstory books. Read a book from a series where someone continued the series after the original author dies (can be prequels or sequels) This is NOT a list task but this list may be helpful in finding a book.
Novel Series Continued After Death Of Original Author
The book can be from any point in the series and from either the original or the new author.
Required: If the continuation author is not clearly identified, state the original author and the author who continued the series.

Should be correct now.

Robin P | 1609 comments Thanks! I see what you mean about this not being a complete list. I do see at least one Sherlock Holmes story. So for Option 6 - Will these 2 Sherlock Holmes books work?
The Giant Rat of Sumatra
Sherlock Holmes and a Scandal in Batavia.

Katrisa | 1396 comments Robin P either of those books will work.

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments For option 6, how do you feel about the V.C. Andrews books that were published after her death? The author, Andrew Neiderman, writes under the name V.C. Andrews (as indicated on her GR bio) so all the books have her listed as the author whether she wrote them or not.

That works! You can read any book with author VC Andrews.

On Task 1, does it have to be specifically the word "Desert" OR can it be found intact? For example, would this work?
Deserter

message 19: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2718 comments For Option 6, does this include series where the final book was started or outlined by the original author and completed by someone else. Examples:

The Painted Queen (Amelia Peabody #20 by Elizabeth Peters and Joan Hess)
A Memory of Light (Wheel of Time #14 by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson)

Or does the new author need to have written a complete book in the series?

Also, does Goodreads have to list them in the same series?

Jill Paton Walsh has written several sequels to Dorothy L. Sayers Lord Peter Wimsey books, but they are on a separate GR series page. The Sayers books are listed as "Lord Peter Wimsey" and "Lord Peter Wimsey & Harriet Vane (Original Series)". The Jill Paton Walsh books are listed as "Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane".

I'll take it. It's hard to judge exactly and the water is a focus of the cover

Just the word desert on its own (or plural deserts) but deserter changes the meaning

The book can be outlined by the original author (that was the case with Dune) and The Wheel of Time was the other series that came immediately to mind.

You can use any of the Lord Peter Whimseys. The Dune series books are often listed as separate series and that was my inspiration :)

For Option 4, would simply reading something from the Dune universe count, as the title would match exactly? Probably sounds like a silly question, but I can't help feeling it's not quite in the spirit of the task somehow!

Read carefully.
Option 2 has been changed:

Read a book with a cover that depicts a natural body of water, such as a lake, river, or ocean. The body of water must be central to the scene and must be larger than a swimming pool. Underwater scenes work as long as they are natural water sources (no pool lane markers, tile edges, etc)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments So just to confirm for Option 6, I would be able to use the Lord Darcy omnibus, by Randall Garrett (which neatly matches the 500+ books requirement at 673pg), because two more books were later written by Michael Kurland, which are included in the Series listing: https://www.goodreads.com/series/4305...

And while I'm at it, is this body of water big enough for Option 2?

Yes your Lord Darcy books will work since the original author died in 1987 and Kurland published a book in the series in 1988.

I keep going back and forth on Halloween Moon. I will accept it since the Bay is mentioned in the series title
