SOLVED. YA book. Set in Africa, two stories: Girl's village doesn't have water, boy is on the run from a war. [s]

I forgot the name of a book, I was reading in school and we never finished it. It is set in Africa and there are two different stories. A girl lives in a village where she has to walk a long way to get water, then some guys come along and declare that there is water there. The boy had to leave his village and family because there was a war going on. He made a friend along the way and found his Uncle. The friend dies and (this may be before or after) they go to a camp but then have to leave because it is not safe. They also have to cross the Nile River and they make boats to do so. I"m not sure but I think the Uncle also dies. If anyone knows the book I'm talking about, please tell me. I read this in 2018, but it was probably around well before that.
