Shelf 2 Alternate Reality/Universe

Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Pages: 400
Date Finished: 2/17/2022
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:
This is a different retelling of the fairy tale but a good one. Cinder is a Cyborg and doesn't remember anything about her past. She has been living the live of being unwanted by her stepmother and now that she finds out that she is needed, she keeps it from her family. She must now learn her past in order to have a future. Cinder makes you feel for her because she desperately wants to find a life where people care about her and not about what she is.

Madness of the Horde King by Zoey Draven

Rating: ★★★☆☆
Most likely it will be the last book in this series that I will read. I've looked at the blurp of the following 2 books and I am not interested in the heros at all.
This book had more story than the previous installments because the Ghertun (the enemy) had been collecting slaves from all the other races. So here enters Vienne, a human slave, to deliver a message and ultimatum to the Dothikkar (King of all Horde Kings).
The problem is that the Mad Horde King (hero) was not bloodthirsty or cruel as the previous book suggested.......he was just mad because he could see ghosts. For a religious people revering all creation, communing with the dead was taboo and a curse to the mad Horde King. He was a tortured soul and had emotional trauma aplenty but never got him nowhere and Vienne was too damn secretive with a slave mentality to really interest me.
On the one hand the plot advanced far more than the previous two books but I don't see the point in continuing this series. There are far more better written books out there to keep my interest.

Thoughts:
Definitely an Ilona Andrews fan...so was expecting a great book. And I thought it was. The two main characters are "polite" enemies, who need to work together to solve a problem with their respective spouses. Unexpectedly, they work well together, and understand one another on a level that most in their families (the power-units on the planet) can not.
Lots of adventure, battles and fun banter. This was definitely a fun read! Can't wait for more from this duo (the authors! Although I would love more of these characters, too!).

It was short but a good addition. I'm always amazed at the duo for crafting a rich backstory and worldbuilding with an economy of words.

Erika has crushed on Michael since she was younger. Now she has moved to the same city as him, he will use that crush against her. Michael and his friends sees her as the one who destroyed their lives and now they want revenge. This story is full of crazy sexual tension between Michael and Erika and them trying to fight it and each other. You see Erika growing strong and then turn the tables on the friends. A suspenseful plot full of revenge, greed jealously and violence that will leave you wanting to know about all the characters.

Second book in the series finds Kyra mooning still over Mason. I don't know what to think of this love interest when Mason has no problem ignoring her for 6 months and giving her the cold shoulder when they cross path.
The story did not flow as easily has the previous book and I found myself easily putting the book down...and come back to it later. I think I continued because Kyra has a big rescue heart, collecting critters and caring for the unwanted. All my latest cats adoptions where second hand or shelter so maybe I relate to the character a little. Another point is that I do live in Montreal, the city where the story is taking place, it adds a little something to the telling.
I might pick up the next book if the shelf call for it but I'm in no hurry.

It's supposed to be the last book of the series so might as well get it of my TBR pile. I was a bit disappointed in the last few offering but it's the last and I hate unfinished series.....

Thoughts:
I always enjoy Keri Arthur's books, and love this particular world.
Lizzie is a very strong, very real character. She fights the evils, and she has good friends/people backing her up. I love her relationship with Aiden, though he needs to grow-up/take a reality check. The day Lizzie has been dreading has arrived, but not in the way that was expected. No spoilers....but just in case, putting the marks!... (view spoiler) I can't wait for June 28, 2022 (expected publication date) and

Alex has found her mom dead and is now trying to get back to the Covenant. She is put on a trial period to learn how to act and to train. During this time she discovers so much about herself and her life and future. She does not know how to handle all the things that is going on and will be going on and she runs off and does what she wants. No matter who she risks because she has her own plan. Most of the drama in this book happens because Alex has her own agenda and is not willing to listen to those around or over her.

This is the last book of the series, for now, and is about Azar's redemption. He's the only enemy Salorian that came through the Rift along with the Drakonis, read slaves.
There are a lot of things that could have been explored about the Salorian and Drakoni world since Azar's memory was intact. The story could have been fleshed out a lot more but that's a typical Ruby Dixon problem: the focus is always about the development of the main couple and plot is almost a side note. On the one hand Melina was not a doormat and gave ethical education to Azar so he could improve as a being and finally be redeemed.

Thoughts:
I've (We've) been waiting a long while for this book, and I'm quite happy Ms. Cole is publishing again.
I quite enjoyed this installment, and how Kereney (Ren) is strong and makes her own choices, decisions. She fights the attraction to Munro (who is doing remarkably well after torture).
There is a lot of snark, lots of action, lots of characters that I've missed. All around, a very enjoyable addition...and I'm very tempted to do a re-read of the series

Review:
Madisyn is a loner who doesn't want to need anyone. Bracken has cut himself off emotionally from everyone after he lost his family. They have known each other for years and did not know they were mates. They fight hard and love harder. Bracken must take it slow or risk losing Madisyn but he will protect her even if she does not agree. This is a great addition to the series and I enjoyed watching two crazy shifter's work through the good bad and crazy to make this relationship grow.

I have a love/hate relationship with this author. I loved her other pack series but they seem to be more of the same from book to book and could be more concise.
This series does not suffer from the same problem, other than borrowing kidnapping ideas from her other series. From the beginning of the Dark in you series we get introduced to the Hellhound Tanner and the Hellcat Devon. Predictably they get along as well as cats and dogs so it was a real treat to see them circle each other, hiss, exchange gag gifts and simply being a pain in the ass of the other.
I was a bit worried that this couple would not measure to Harper and Knox but I was pleasantly surprised.
